# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Weaste

Do not fire up the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, across Weaste and the rest of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Call us and then our technicians shall show you what happens next before you attempt much else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. This is why you never crank it, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: switching it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into precisely those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to sort, and we would much rather get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Mode Wheel Road, turn the hazards on and keep it there.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode that starts M50 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- What went in, roughly how many litres, and also if your car has fired — the three answers settle the full call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The trip back would more or less double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Renault Clio. So leave the car where it sits. Phone us from the platform if that's easier — no one needs you standing over the car at Eccles while we get on, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

It starts at a forecourt, typically. Quite often it finishes at one too.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Shell that is usually where the drain gets done.

A filling station is the only place the mistake can be stopped before your motor has run.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where the car stands.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Firing it over four car lengths? Don't.

## Can our technicians serve your end of Weaste?

As a residential suburb, Weaste has a steady call, and the villages nearby come along on that same run: Seedley and Salford, Salford Quays and Little Bolton, Pendleton.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most places in Greater Manchester, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Phone and check instead of guessing.

The map is the ground this page spans.

The vehicle does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work across every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

You will be told to shift the vehicle clear of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. On the zig-zags outside Willow Tree Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Mercedes E-Class running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Fire it up three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol past your filter on to the pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

## Stopped at the roadside somewhere around Weaste?

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop.

If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge of Bute Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or step clear of it depends on if staying in it is safe.

Don't fire it up to reach a nicer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that blend deeper into the system.

Carrying on causes your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient place, and that is no trouble for us.

It will fire up. It will move off perfectly well. That is the problem, because a diesel on a weakened tank behaves usually whilst wearing the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not try the drive home from Coach and Horses — leave the BMW 5 Series then phone us.

## Driven it already? Pull over, and read below

This is where the M602 comes in — under a mile away from Weaste.

It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart it to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything near the under a mile to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it passes through, and petrol weakens it. That is the entire process, and it accounts for the usual Horsham Street Community Garden call: a diesel Vauxhall Astra that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and your engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

## Weaste itself

Weaste is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside near Salford and Salford Quays. Weaste has a mix of terraced housing and is located at an elevation of 31 metres, with Seedley to the east. Weaste is close to the city of Salford, being only 0.5 miles away, and is part of the larger North West region. Weaste is approximately 164.2 miles from London.

## Once our engineers reach you in Weaste: what follows

- We establish what was put in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Away goes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- We turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Citroen C3 left close to Saint Lukes Church hardly two streets on. Call us, then leave the car off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only draining that tank.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Weaste

Never fire it up: that first step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Weaste page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Weaste

We can't put one price on this page truthfully, because this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a technician.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Things our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Weaste

## I'm on a forecourt around Weaste. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work gets done.

Often, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is the car still with you?

Never switch the car back on.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
