# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Weeting?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Weeting and the rest of Norfolk. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Ring us before all else starts, so you'll see what follows after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Do not crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually can't run, so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a few miles. People get that backwards. It isn't fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.

- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition be.

- Never pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hereward Way, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.

- A van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting IP27 0, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired. These three answers shape your whole call-out.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

A big share of this job is done at a pump, because that's where it often starts.

If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that is normally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

The forecourt is the one setting it gets stopped before the engine has fired.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting it four lengths does not merit cranking the motor.

We're in car parks like the one at Aldi a lot, and it is hardly ever the fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height bar at the way in, which decides if our van gets to you at all. So say how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way the car is facing. If there is no space to work alongside the Renault Megane, our engineers shift it without the engine. That is not fussiness over a few seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of your tank towards your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier spot is gradually a bigger job than one no one touched.

## Will our engineers reach your side of Weeting?

Weeting is a rural village, and so we are out to it and to the places near it on the usual journeys: Fengate, Brandon, Town Street, Santon Downham and Hockwold cum Wilton.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all places around Norfolk have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Call us and check instead of guessing — boundaries above all, and anywhere your phone might struggle with.

See our map for the ground included here.

The vehicle doesn't need to move to us. We work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing tells you, as from the driver's seat there is nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely normal on the way back from Weeting Church of England Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel fires up, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump keeps working without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stranded at the roadside around Weeting

Not everyone gets the chance to stop somewhere safe.

If you realised after setting off and ended up on the verge beside Lynn Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Out of your car while it is not wise to wait in it, with it when it is.

Never start it up to get to a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the fuel system.

However inconvenient the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than carrying on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Your M11 is the one which counts here, and lies under 50 miles from Weeting.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's safe, pull up there, and don't start the car to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the further a diesel BMW 1 Series travelled, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and flat on the way back is how the run to Parrott's Piece went, then, and the tank is where to look. Stop somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

## A little about Weeting

Weeting is a village in the eastern part of Norfolk, situated inland at a low elevation of around 14 metres. Weeting lies near the villages of Fengate and Brandon, and is connected to the nearby city of Ely. Weeting has a population of approximately 1275 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

## What we do when our engineers get to you around Weeting

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- The tank is emptied of it.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Bleeding your system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running properly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Calling from near Weeting Village Hall? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it's on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The place itself hardly matters: on-street is where our technicians work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped space than a car someone has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Audi A6, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines purged, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Weeting is a distinct matter

Don't fire it up: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the issue itself.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Weeting page. Both are ours to handle.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That is your misfuelled Volvo XC60, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly near Weeting Village Sign, then leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Weeting

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Weeting

## At a petrol station in Weeting, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Your engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining misfilled cars, Weeting and the rest of Norfolk, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
