# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Welbourn? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Welbourn and the rest of Lincolnshire. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

We will tell you what your next step is. Ring us — this comes ahead of anything else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up — and don't depend on it if it does start. That is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is grinding that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone also. Diesel does two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of your tank then into just those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It won't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A car that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort out, and we would sooner come to an odd spot than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Beck Street, turn those hazards on then keep it there.

- Before you ring, get your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts LN5 0 — that is what decides whether our van shows up or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has been run. Those answers shape all that happens next.

How many miles you went is what our technicians care about, not how long the car has been sitting — and here is why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it protects that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a rushed refuel on the way in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting at Ancaster since quarter past eight shows those few miles were done with your pump working on a fluid drained of a great deal of its protection. Call us then leave it just where it stands.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the work often begins, and where a good portion of that ends.

If you are still at the forecourt at Gulf, that is typically where this drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

Before the motor has run — the forecourt is the single location this gets spotted.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Well worth it.

Firing it just to move four car lengths isn't.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the miles: a mile at gentle throttle pulls very little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere in Welbourn, a boot full of shopping, and you stuck at Lincolnshire Co-op — call us. Leaving that space isn't worth a restart. Your tank gets drained where it stands, the lines rinsed, clean diesel in, and you drive home.

## Do we reach your corner of Welbourn?

Welbourn is a rural village, and we get out to the town and to the villages by it on those same rounds: Leadenham, Leadenham Park, Wellingore, Fulbeck and Temple Bruer.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Lincolnshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Close to the border, or somewhere the satnav gets wrong? Phone to ask instead of presuming.

See our map for the area included here.

Every bit of that is territory we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Someone will urge you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by The Welbourn Church of England Primary School is an inconvenience; the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol past the fuel filter then into your pump. Stay put, let everyone complain, and give us a call.

## Stranded at the kerbside near Welbourn

Some people have no safe place to pull over at all.

If you realised after setting off and landed along the verge of Crosby Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us instead of an unusual one.

Wait with the motor when it is wise to be in it, and out of the car when it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Here's what a job in the car park by Joiners Arms normally looks like. Our technicians reach your car, ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then we fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you drive away.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

under 50 miles from Welbourn, the M1 is what counts here.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Get off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and don't start it to reposition.

Long run? Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in the van.

## Where's Welbourn?

Welbourn is a small village in Lincolnshire, situated approximately 11 miles south of Lincoln, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Welbourn sits in a low-lying area of the county, with an elevation of around 40 metres, and is near to the villages of Leadenham and Wellingore. Welbourn is a rural community with a population of around 674 residents, and is located within the East Midlands region, about 110 miles north of London.

## What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around Welbourn

- The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.

- Out flows the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- After it is fired up, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes E-Class left close to Welbourn Village Hall barely two streets on. Phone us, then leave the vehicle off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines instead of only draining your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Welbourn is a distinct problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — do not start it — yet this issue isn't.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Welbourn page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Welbourn costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure wouldn't be fair here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Welbourn motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Welbourn petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave the vehicle off.

Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no.

That tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Lincolnshire and in Welbourn: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
