# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Welby?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Welby and the remainder of Leicestershire. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not run and the fuel is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Our engineers can explain what the following step will be. Ring us — that goes ahead of anything else.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it pulls away — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start it. And once started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition remains off also — flick it on and you commonly prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.

- Do not add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Saint Bartholomews Way, anywhere — an awkward location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a car that never shifted.

- Keep your position ready before you ring. A postcode starting LE14 3 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van showing up and our van circling.

- Three answers settle the full visit: the fuel you put in, the approximate measure involved, and if it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on a forecourt?

A large chunk of this job is finished at a pump, because that is where it mostly starts.

If you're still on the forecourt at Esso, that is typically where this drain gets done — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission.

No place but a forecourt can the mistake be caught with the motor still untouched.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

The attendants will generally happily wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing.

Firing it just for four car lengths? Never.

## Service near Welby

As a small village, Welby has a regular call, while the areas nearby go along on that same journey: Potter Hill and Asfordby Hill, The Valley and Melton Mowbray, Ab Kettleby.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most towns around Leicestershire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Call us to check rather than assuming, above all if you are on a border or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.

This map marks the area this page includes.

The car never needs to move to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Welby: broken down where you pulled up

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull in.

Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge of Welby Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you stay beside the vehicle or move clear of it rests on if staying in it is wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky spot, and that's no trouble for us.

Park it there overnight. Call us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked in the parking area at The Welby deteriorates while it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a straightforward one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The question our technicians arrive with is about the run there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can find its way past the piston rings into the sump.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M1 comes into it — under 25 miles from Welby.

A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are typically lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first sensible exit and turn off.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you call. It affects what our engineers bring.

Here is the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the normal Oak Plantation call — a diesel BMW 5 Series, out there without complaint and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was designed round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## All about Welby

Welby is a small locality in Leicestershire, situated inland at an elevation of 117 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Welby lies approximately 13.7 miles east of Leicester and 94 miles north of London, near to other localities such as Potter Hill and Asfordby Hill. Welby is surrounded by rolling countryside and is close to The Valley, a nearby area of scenic interest. Welby has a population of around 549 residents, making it a small and quiet community.

## What our engineers do when our technicians get to you in Welby

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those responses alter what the work actually is.

- The tank is emptied completely.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to St Bartholomew. For a diesel Mercedes A-Class whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had weakened fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just that tank drained.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Welby is a different job

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — do not start it — but the problem isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Welby page. Both are ours to handle.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then phone us about the Kia Sportage by Welby Lane Mission Church, and don't worry that you cannot say how full the tank was. Almost nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our engineers work it out there. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Welby?

What shifts the price is listed below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

If it isn't time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Drain it and put new diesel in — that's the advice you'll get, normally from somebody certain, and it's only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Volvo XC60 close to The Cove and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound sensible. What takes place next is the problem: the motor at once pulls the petrol left resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. We flush your system and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, which is the difference between the car being repaired and your car simply starting.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around Welby

## At a petrol station around Welby, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the station's consent we visit BP and the other forecourts locally routinely.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

What settles how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. Now what?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct problem. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## You, and the car, still together?

That engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people assume.

Draining wrongly fuelled motors, Welby and the rest of Leicestershire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
