# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Byfleet? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout West Byfleet and the remainder of Surrey. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Phone before anything else starts, so you will hear what comes after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not crank it, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Flicking the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition be.

- Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it merely hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A car that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Parked on the verge on Old Woking Road? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An odd place works for us better than a started motor.

- Before you phone, gather your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning KT14 6 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how many litres, and also if your car has fired. Those three replies settle the whole job.

The drive back would more or less double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf. So leave it where it stands. Ring us from the platform if that's easier — nobody needs you hovering over the vehicle outside the nearest station whilst our technicians get on, and tonight trumps finding out on Monday.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

A fair part of this job is done at the pump, because that's where it mostly begins.

We operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Esso that is usually where this drain happens.

Before the motor has fired — the forecourt is the only setting it ends up stopped.

Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the help.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

The call our engineers hope for sounds like this: diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off outside Waitrose. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Service around West Byfleet

Pyrford, Woodham, New Haw, Sheerwater, Byfleet — all of them on the rounds that bring us over to West Byfleet too, a village.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations across Surrey, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Phone to check instead of presuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

The patch this page covers is on the map.

Your car does not need to come to us. We work across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from West Byfleet Junior School. They always do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be providing. Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Call us with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second one counts more than the first.

## Kerbside stops around West Byfleet

The chance to stop anywhere safe does not come to everybody.

A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge of Station Approach or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Clear of the motor when it's not wise to sit in it, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a van coming out to a tricky spot, and that is no problem for us.

Straightforward job, this one — until someone takes it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting at The Station with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so leave the vehicle then ring us once it's light. Expect a question about the run there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

This is where the local M25 comes in — under a mile away from West Byfleet.

A misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Pull off at the first safe junction, turn off, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in our van.

## West Byfleet itself

West Byfleet is a village in Surrey, situated on the River Wey and surrounded by the neighbouring communities of Pyrford, Woodham, and New Haw. West Byfleet sits at a relatively low elevation of 28 metres, approximately 20 miles southwest of central London. West Byfleet has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly composed of flats, reflecting its proximity to the capital and commuter links. West Byfleet remains a popular residential location due to its scenic riverside setting and accessibility to London.

## The call-out around West Byfleet, step by step

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- Out flows the contaminated mixture.

- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what started the trouble.

- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Our technicians start the engine and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and since everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## West Byfleet AdBlue removal is a different job

The fault isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own West Byfleet page. Both are ours to handle.

## West Byfleet prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One number would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Your filter, the lines, the pump and its rail: that is where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank isn't where most of the trouble rests by this point, and a diesel Peugeot 208 that got by Cornerstone Centre needs your system flushed rather than drained.

## Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around West Byfleet

## Fuel drains on a West Byfleet petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more commonly than drivers assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Is your car still with you?

The motor remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

Across Surrey and in West Byfleet: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
