# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in West Porton?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over West Porton and the remainder of Renfrewshire. The first thing to do is not to start the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

A single ring to us is sufficient: we will tell you what follows after this. Do that first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, never rely on it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Leave the ignition off too. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually sufficient to prime that system, which pulls this petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.

- Do not tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather drive to an awkward location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Bruce Road, turn the hazards on then leave it there.

- Have your location ready before you dial. A postcode beginning PA7 5 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how many litres, and if your car has run. Those three answers determine the entire visit.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where this job usually kicks off, and where a big chunk of it finishes.

The drain typically happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our engineers work, and regularly.

Nowhere else except a forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the motor still cold.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car sits.

The attendants will generally offer to move the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing.

Firing it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

## Service in West Porton

The same journeys take us to Bishopton, Rossland, Linburn, Bowling and Bargarran as well as West Porton, which is a coastal area.

There are separate pages for most locations in Renfrewshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing at all about whether our technicians come.

Ring us and ask instead of guessing — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav might struggle with.

Check the map for the area covered here.

Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your car never needs to travel to us.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it will not run, and so the motorist stops there and the harm stops with them. Flip it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, idles and moves off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is meant to be giving. That is the catch, and it's why your diesel Skoda Octavia will have felt entirely usual coming back from the local primary school. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, so nothing alerts you. Phone with about how far you drove, and how hard; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Stranded by the kerb anywhere in West Porton?

Not everyone has a chance to stop somewhere sensible.

Set off, then realised? Finished up on the verge of Stuart Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit beside the car when it is safe to sit there, but clear of it when it's not.

Do not start it up to get to a safer place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into your fuel system.

However inconvenient the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than carrying on.

Three answers decide much of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether the motor has run since. We ask for them when we arrive at your car in the car park at the pub in the village. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the lines are flushed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once new diesel is in and your system bled, our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before you drive away.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local M8 comes into it — under a mile away from West Porton.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that is safe, stop there, and do not restart the car to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring differs.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it runs through, and petrol thins it. That's the entire process, and it accounts for the ordinary Wester Rossland Woods call: a diesel Peugeot 308 that went out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past tolerances instead, and the engine gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. No part of that is the motor failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

## West Porton itself

West Porton is a coastal locality in Renfrewshire, situated near the towns of Bishopton and Erskine, and approximately 11 miles west of Glasgow. West Porton lies at an elevation of 33 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. West Porton is part of the wider Glasgow urban fringe, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach. West Porton's population is around 1932 people, according to recent estimates.

## What our engineers do when we arrive with you in West Porton

- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- The polluted fuel is drawn from the tank.

- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what created the issue, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around West Porton?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while the issue under it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around West Porton has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That is your wrongly fuelled Ford Focus, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to Bishopton Library, and leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in West Porton

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine failing — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Mercedes GLC now waiting near Bishopton Community Centre. Turn the car off and call us.

## Petrol in diesel queries from West Porton motorists

## Fuel drains on a West Porton petrol station forecourt

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers visit BP and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable much more frequently than motorists assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Don't switch the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around West Porton and across Renfrewshire.
