# Petrol in a Diesel Car in West View

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still in the tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest in West View or the remainder of Durham, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before all else happens, so you'll know what comes from there.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Don't crank it — and don't depend on it if it runs. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel usually just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, idles and pulls away just fine for several miles. It is not fine. It's wearing that fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: turning it on is often enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those components.

- Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would rather drive to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a car that has never moved. On the verge on King Oswy Drive, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Our van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts TS24 9, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you dial.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if your car has been started. Your responses decide whatever happens next.

How far you went is what we ask about, not how long the car has been parked — and here is why. Diesel has two tasks on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before burning it greases that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried refuel on the way in, the penny dropping at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf left outside Hartlepool since quarter past eight means those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a fluid drained of most of its protection. Phone and leave it right where it is.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

It kicks off at a forecourt, generally. Regularly the work wraps up there as well.

If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that is usually where this drain gets done — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.

Nowhere else except a garage can this be spotted with your engine still untouched.

Our engineers can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

The staff will generally help you move it out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing.

Cranking the car over four car lengths? Never.

Straightforward, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at light throttle draws little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Peugeot 308 somewhere in West View, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stranded at Lidl — phone us. Leaving the bay is not worth a restart. The tank gets drained where it sits, your fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and you drive away.

## Parts our team serve around West View

As a residential suburb, West View sees a frequent visit, whilst the places nearby come along on that same journey: Throston Grange Estate and Dyke House, Hart Station and High Throston, Throston.

Our technicians still come. The places above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns across Durham, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage.

Contact us and check instead of guessing, above all where you're on the boundary or anywhere a satnav misreads.

This map is the patch this page includes.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground we work on, and none of it asks the car to travel to us.

## West View: stranded wherever you stopped

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere sensible.

If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge of Gilberti Place, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Stay with your car while it is wise to be inside, and out of it if it isn't.

Do not fire it up to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the fuel system.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than a van coming out to an inconvenient place, and that's no bother for us.

Straightforward job, this one — until somebody drives it home. A diesel Audi A4 left outside Hartlepool RFC Clubhouse with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the car then phone us once it's light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol battles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the rings and into the oil.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the A1(M) comes in — under 15 miles away from West View.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe junction and turn off.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our technicians bring alters.

## A bit about West View

West View is a suburban area located on the coast of County Durham, with an elevation of approximately 12 metres above sea level. West View sits near the Throston Grange Estate and Dyke House, and is close to Hart Station, providing residents with access to nearby cities like Sunderland. West View is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which is typical of many suburban areas in the North East of England.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you around West View

- Our technicians check what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- We empty your tank of the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that caused any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- Once it is turned on, our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and because everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

Three things help when you phone from close to St. John Vianney Catholic Church: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can park beside without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our engineers work, and so the place itself is rarely the trouble — we would much rather deal with a tight parking spot than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more convenient. We'll drain your BMW 1 Series, change the filter where there's a workable one, flush your lines and put fresh fuel through the whole circuit, as by this point the worst of it is resting in the lines rather than in that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in West View is a distinct job

Do not fire it up: that first instruction applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own West View page. Both are ours to handle.

New spots are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the narrower petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Topped up near Holy Trinity Church without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone spots it, and distance is what decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in West View

One figure wouldn't be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much your tank holds.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

## West View motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a West View petrol station forecourt

A good share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Asda, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer on the spot.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix sucked through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more regularly than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different problem and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

Never switch your engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than motorists fear.

Draining wrongly fuelled cars, West View and the rest of Durham, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
