# Westmead: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Westmead and the remainder of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Contact us and our team shall tell you what comes from here before you do much else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you often prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would much rather come to a tricky place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Westmead, that means hazards on then keep the car.

- Keep your location prepared before you ring. A postcode starting SN5 7 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.

- What got in, about how many litres, and also if your car has run — those three replies settle your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat outside Swindon since breakfast? The day has lost you nothing — fuel in a tank is inert. It was the run in that pushed weakened diesel through your pump. Phone us before you fetch the car.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A fair portion of the work is done at the pump, since that's where it often starts.

Still at Sainsbury's? Then that's normally where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the station.

At the forecourt, it gets caught with the motor never fired, and no place else does it.

Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys are what determine that.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth it.

Cranking the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Every start primes that fuel system and draws more of that mix out of the tank and toward your pump — which is why a vehicle moved twice into a nicer bay has quietly become a bigger job than one left just where it stopped. So when our engineers cannot work next to your diesel Volkswagen Passat, we roll the vehicle without running it. None of that is fussiness about a handful of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at The Food Warehouse our engineers attend often, and the fuel is rarely the awkward part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height barrier at the way in settling if our van gets to you at all. Tell us how penned in you are, and which way your car points.

## Westmead plus the towns beside it

These same journeys get us to Rivermead, Bridgemead, Westlea, Eastleaze and Even Swindon besides Westmead, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most towns in Wiltshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Presuming is the mistake to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere your satnav fails. Contact us to check.

That map outlines the ground this page covers.

The lot is ground our engineers serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never bring your car anywhere.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Westlea Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone. Three miles in the Audi A4 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel to demand — and a frantic morning run needs plenty.

## Westmead: stuck where you parked

The opportunity to pull over somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Westmead Drive, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Sit by the vehicle if it is safe to be there, yet out of the car if it's not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Our van driving to a tricky spot is no trouble for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 3 miles out of Westmead, the M4 is what matters now.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in our van.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which explains the usual Cycle Bridge Copse call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without a murmur and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was designed around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where is Westmead?

Westmead is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 92 metres. Westmead lies near the cities of Bath and Chippenham, and is part of a network of residential areas that include Rivermead, Bridgemead, and Westlea. Westmead has a population of approximately 1801 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Westmead is located 72.6 miles from London, making it a commuter hub for those working in the capital.

## What we do when we reach you in Westmead

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- Our technicians clear that tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Our engineers purge the lines and clear the filter, and so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Westmead?

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and deposits.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Westmead page. Both are ours to handle.

Most of these occur somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical instead of careless — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up by Delta Tennis Centre that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Westmead

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much your tank holds.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Westmead

## Fuel drains on a Westmead petrol station forecourt

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more frequently than people fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, because our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Still with your vehicle?

Keep the car turned off.

If you have already driven it, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.

Throughout Wiltshire and around Westmead: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
