# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Westrop

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, across Westrop and the rest of Wiltshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When the motor has not yet been started and the petrol is still in the tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

Our engineers can tell you what your next stage is. Call us — this comes ahead of everything else.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Never start the car — and do not rely on it if it runs. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just cannot run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for several miles. It is not all right. It is wearing your fuel system while you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Westrop? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky place works for us better than a started motor.

- A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning SN6 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you call.

- What got in, approximately how many litres, and also if the motor has started — the three answers settle the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Draining petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

It begins at a pump, generally. Often enough the job wraps up on site too.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that's generally where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get past. Welcome the help.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

## Will our engineers serve your corner of Westrop?

As a residential suburb, Westrop sees a routine visit, while the areas close by go with it on that same journey: Highworth and Eastrop, Redlands and Swanborough, Hannington.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns across Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Contact us and ask instead of presuming, above all when you're on the border or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

This map shows the area this page spans.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our engineers work on, and none of it asks your car to travel to us.

You'll be advised to shift the car clear of the gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags outside Westrop Primary & Nursery School, a misfilled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Fire it up three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime draws more petrol beyond the filter towards the pump. Let them complain. Ring us.

## Stranded at the roadside in Westrop

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge of Coffin Close, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor when it's not safe to wait there, by it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart it to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

Driving on does your car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no problem for us.

It will fire up. It will pull away perfectly well. That's the trouble, because a diesel on a diluted tank runs typically while wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never chance the drive home from Globe — leave the Peugeot 3008 and ring us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 10 miles from Westrop, your M4 is what matters now.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the car to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

The pump isn't turning, so whatever the diesel Mercedes E-Class did on the way to The Green, none of it is going on now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

## Westrop itself

Westrop is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 136 metres, with a mix of residential and rural landscapes. Westrop lies near the towns of Highworth and Swindon, and is also close to the smaller areas of Eastrop and Redlands. Westrop has a population of around 6112 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Westrop is located 21 miles from Oxford and 68 miles from London, making it a commuter base for both cities.

## Once our engineers reach you around Westrop: what we do

- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- The tainted fuel comes from that tank.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what caused the issue, so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Westrop

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the problem under it is a separate one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Westrop has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — near St Michael and All Angels or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Westrop?

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank holds.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

What takes place next is the issue. The motor at once sucks the petrol left waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put fresh diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that tip is only half right, because do it to a diesel Citroen C3 parked up, United Reformed Church say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. We flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle simply starting.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Westrop

## I am on a forecourt in Westrop. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a large portion of this work happens.

We work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is fixable a lot more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

That engine remains off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Westrop and throughout Wiltshire.
