# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Whitby

With that tank still holding the fuel and your engine not yet turned over, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Whitby and the rest of North Yorkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

We will explain what the next stage is. Phone — it happens before everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Never fire it up. Turned on all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run, and so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that backwards. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel performs two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which draws the petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.

- Never dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Our team would much rather drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Brunswick Street, that means hazards on and keep the car.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting YO21 1, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- What went in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has run — the three details shape the whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you went is what our technicians ask about, not how long the motor has been stood — and here's why. Diesel does two tasks on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before burning it lubricates its high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a fast fill on the drive in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Skoda Octavia left at the nearest station since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were travelled with the pump working on a liquid drained of a lot of its protection. Call us then leave the car precisely where it stands.

## At a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where the work often starts, and where a large portion of that closes.

Still at Esso? Then that is normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one place this ends up stopped.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

The attendants will normally help you move the vehicle out from the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing.

Cranking it just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Car parks like the one outside Heron Foods are somewhere our engineers attend all the time, and your fuel is rarely the tricky part. That bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height barrier on the way in that determines whether a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how hemmed in you are when you phone, and which way your car is facing. When our engineers can't work alongside your diesel Peugeot 308 we will shift the car without running it — and that's not fussiness about a few seconds of running. Each start primes your fuel system and draws more of the blend out of your tank and on to the pump, so a vehicle moved twice into a better spot has gradually become a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Parts our team cover around Whitby

Whitby is a coastal town, and so our technicians go out to the town and to the places around it on those same trips: Fishburn Park, West Cliff, High Stakesby, Castle Park and Airy Hill.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all locations across North Yorkshire, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Near the border, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Contact us to enquire instead of assuming.

That map shows the patch this page covers.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

## Roadside breakdowns around Whitby

Not everyone gets a safe place to stop.

A normal call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up along the verge of Victoria Square or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Remain by the motor while it is sensible to sit inside, but clear of the car when it is not.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

We'll take our van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for the car that is far better than driving on.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park outside The Whitby Way for the whole job, which typically runs like this. First we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, because much of the work turns on those answers. That tank is emptied of the tainted blend, the fuel lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it's a serviceable one. With new diesel in and your system primed, your car is fired up and checked, and once it's running correctly you pull away.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 50 miles out of Whitby, the A1(M) is what matters now.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a rough idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart it to reposition.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our technicians bring.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump is not turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to South Seas Garden in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

## A bit about Whitby

Whitby is a coastal town in North Yorkshire, situated on the north-east coast of England, with a population of around 12597 people. Whitby sits at a low elevation of 9 metres, looking out over the North Sea, and is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock. Whitby is located near several notable areas, including Fishburn Park, West Cliff, and High Stakesby, and is approximately 40.8 miles from the city of York. Whitby is also a significant distance from London, at around 206.7 miles away.

## Once our technicians get to you around Whitby: what happens

- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The tank gets cleared of it.

- We flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what caused the trouble.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- We turn it on and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

After that it's ready to set off.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whitby

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is the same — do not fire it up — but this fault is not.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal in Whitby has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Whitby

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there is safe for our van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, works too.

That softness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine giving up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven once more before somebody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Renault Captur now resting by St John the Evangelist. Turn the car off then phone us.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Whitby

## At a petrol station around Whitby, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers attend Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has diluted.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to cope with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Standing next to it?

Shut off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car after that.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

On-site fuel draining in Whitby and across North Yorkshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
