# Whitchurch: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Whitchurch or the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone and we shall explain what comes after that before you try much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never crank it. And once started, don't believe it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Turning your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a fuller tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- We'd sooner drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Bristol Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BS14 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how much, and also if the engine has started. Those three facts shape the whole job.

Do not take it home. The journey in has already pushed a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that BMW 3 Series, and the journey back would about double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that is simpler. Our engineers do not need you standing over the car outside Bedminster while our technicians work, and our team would far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

## Draining petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

Plenty of this job starts at a pump, so a good share of it gets finished on site.

We operate on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, so if you are still at Tesco that is typically where the drain gets done.

Nowhere other than a garage can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unrun.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key are what decide that.

Attendants will normally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get by. Accept the assistance.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Diesel Nissan Qashqai. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Asda. That is the enquiry we hope for, since the real question under it's about quantity through the pump rather than hours on the clock.

## Will our engineers reach your side of Whitchurch?

The same runs carry us to Stockwood, Hengrove, Hengrove Park, Blackrock and Queen Charlton besides Whitchurch, which is a rural village.

Our technicians do come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of locations around Somerset, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Contact us to enquire instead of assuming — borders above all, and anywhere a satnav can get wrong.

Look at the map for the ground included on this page.

We work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of that, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

## Stranded at the kerbside in Whitchurch

Not everyone gets a suitable spot to stop.

If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge on Church Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a common call for us and not an odd one.

Fine there? Wait beside it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than our van heading out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

What our technicians will ask about is whether that trip there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and whatever doesn't burn can get past the rings then into the sump. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster standing in the car park at Maes Knoll holding a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades while it sits, and so park the car there overnight and ring us next morning.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M32 matters, under 5 miles out of Whitchurch.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

## Whitchurch itself

Whitchurch is a small village in Somerset, situated inland at an elevation of 79 metres, approximately 3.7 miles from Bristol. Whitchurch has a population of around 1055 people and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Whitchurch is close to nearby places such as Stockwood, Hengrove, and Hengrove Park, and is within commuting distance to Bristol. Whitchurch is also relatively close to the city of Bristol, but far enough from London, which is around 104.9 miles away.

## When we get to you in Whitchurch: what we do

- We find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- Our engineers drain your tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very unusual for there to be lasting damage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left the diesel Audi A6 up near Saint Nicholas a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us then leave the car off. The short distance truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our engineers clean your lines rather than only emptying the tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Whitchurch?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault underneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Whitchurch page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Whitchurch prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank holds.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that got by Whitchurch Village Community Centre needs the circuit cleared, not emptied.

## Whitchurch drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Whitchurch petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this takes place.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different fault and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep the engine turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume.

Call-out fuel draining around Whitchurch and throughout Somerset — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
