# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in White Post? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across White Post and the rest of Surrey. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Our engineers shall explain what your next part is. Call us — that comes before all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And if started, never rely on it: that fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it protects — that high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone too: turning it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into exactly those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so do not tip diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so wait where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Coneybury? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Get your location ready before you ring. A postcode starting RH1 4 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus if the car has been run. The replies decide everything that follows.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, so a good portion of that is finished at one.

If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that's typically where the drain happens — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission.

Before the motor has run — a forecourt is the single spot this is halted.

We can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key are what decide that.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Shifting it four bays does not warrant firing the motor.

The call we like goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off at Co-op Food. What we're truly asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Parts our vans cover near White Post

Bletchingley, Brewer Street, Godstone, Nutfield, Church Town — all of those on our journeys that bring us out to White Post too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in Surrey, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours.

Near a border, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Ring us to enquire instead of presuming.

Check the map for the area covered here.

All of that is territory our engineers cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

Nothing warns you, as from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Ford Focus will have felt completely usual on the way back from Bletchingley Village Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel and not the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor usually refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Roadside call-outs across White Post

The opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge of Rabies Heath Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a routine call for us and not an odd one.

Safe where you are? Wait by it. Not safe? Step out and away from it.

Never restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into your fuel system.

We will send the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for your car that is a lot better than pressing on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M23 comes in — under 3 miles away from White Post.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is some smoke, a rough idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit and turn off.

Presume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you phone. What our technicians bring alters.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision parts it runs through, and petrol weakens it. That's the full process, and it accounts for the ordinary St Catherines Cross call: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that went out there without complaint and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel weakens, pressure that should build then stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built around. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## Where is White Post?

White Post is a suburban area in Surrey, situated on the riverside with an elevation of 134 metres. White Post lies within the South East region of England, approximately 18.6 miles from London. White Post is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is located near other suburban areas such as Bletchingley and Godstone. White Post has a population of around 1527 residents.

## The job around White Post, step by step

- Our engineers check what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- That tank is cleared of everything.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Our engineers pour clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- After it's turned on, our technicians check it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away.

We do all of this wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted soon, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around White Post?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this issue underneath it's a different one altogether.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and removes the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in White Post has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Rattling? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Kia Sportage, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Bletchingley Castle, and leave the restarting alone.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around White Post

Our technicians cannot put one price on this page frankly, as this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

No warning light exists for this, which is why cars in that position generally get driven once more before somebody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a few streets, and your diesel Volkswagen Polo is now sitting near The People of God Chapel. Deadness there means fuel that cannot build pressure fully instead of an engine failing. Turn off. Phone us.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around White Post

## Fuel drains on a White Post petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done.

We visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

The engine remains off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in White Post and across Surrey.
