# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Whitehall

Don't fire up your engine. If the fuel is still inside the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that is decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Whitehall and the remainder of Bristol, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Just one ring to us is sufficient: our team shall explain what follows next. Do this right away.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up. Started regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally cannot run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Switching the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel poured on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Our team would sooner come to an odd place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Stretford Road, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Before you phone, gather your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting BS5 7 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.

- Three replies shape the full visit: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate quantity involved, and whether anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Driving it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has sent real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would roughly double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Lawrence Hill perfectly well. Call from the platform if simpler; standing over us while our technicians work is not necessary.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a large part of it finishes.

Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it gets done. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a garage, this is stopped with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does that.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Staff will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the help.

Firing the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a van can get to you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one outside Aldi, mention how much clearance there's round you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians attend frequently. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel Renault Megane, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a handful of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of that blend exits that tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have silently made a bigger job of what was simply a car standing still.

## Do we cover your side of Whitehall?

Whitehall is a residential suburb, and so our technicians head out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual rounds: Lower Easton, St George, Rose Green, Clay Hill and Crofts End.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Bristol, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Call us and enquire rather than presuming — borders above all, and wherever a satnav tends to struggle with.

The map outlines the patch this page spans.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs your vehicle to travel to us.

Move it out of that gateway and sort it out later — that's what someone will say, and it's wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside Whitehall Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

## Stuck by the kerb somewhere around Whitehall?

Not everyone finds a sensible spot to pull in.

A common call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge of Gordon Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Out of the vehicle while it isn't sensible to sit there, beside it if it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the car to reach somewhere safer and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

A van driving to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Park it there overnight. Phone us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the parking area outside The Kings Head worsens as it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains an easy one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our technicians come with is about that run there: a cold motor over a short distance is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

Your M32 is the road which matters here, and it runs under a mile from Whitehall.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you ring. It alters what we bring.

Out there normal, back flat. If that was the run to Packers Field, look at the tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight clearances supposed to build injection pressure — so every additional mile your diesel Peugeot 3008 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, phone us.

## All about Whitehall

Whitehall is a suburban area in Bristol, situated near the lakeside and approximately 2.3 miles from the city centre. Whitehall has a relatively low elevation of 42 metres and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Whitehall is close to other nearby places such as Lower Easton, St George, and Rose Green, and is home to around 11,529 residents.

## Our call-out in Whitehall, step by step

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.

- Out comes the tainted fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the problem.

- The system gets bled, on new diesel.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Whitehall

Do not crank it: that opening step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Whitehall has its own page with the details — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Whitehall

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank can hold.

- Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Whitehall

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Whitehall?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work takes place.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent our engineers visit Texaco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — because although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not a modification, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with the car?

Do not turn the engine back on.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off.

A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people assume.

Draining misfilled vehicles, Whitehall and the rest of Bristol, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
