# Wichelstowe: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has ended up in Wichelstowe or the remainder of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one ring to us is enough: our technicians can show you what follows next. Make it straight away.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and don't trust it if it runs. This is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.

- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which draws that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.

- Do not put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it simply hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- We would much rather travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has never moved. On the verge on Blackhorse Way, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning SN1 7 — that's what settles whether our van shows up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has been run. The responses determine all that happens next.

## Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on the forecourt?

The work begins at a pump, generally. Regularly it wraps up at one as well.

Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the station.

A forecourt is the one spot the mistake can be spotted before the motor has fired.

Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines together with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers deal with it where your car is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The staff will generally help you wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That's worth doing.

Firing the car just for four vehicle lengths? No.

How much fuel the pump has drawn is what we are actually asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the call our engineers like goes like this: diesel Renault Megane, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles done, now switched off outside Waitrose.

## Will our engineers serve your end of Wichelstowe?

Wroughton, North Wroughton, Okus, Old Town, Kingshill — every one of those on our journeys that carry us out to Wichelstowe too, a residential suburb.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and nearly all places around Wiltshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Ring us and ask rather than assuming, above all when you're on a boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

This map shows the area this page spans.

Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the car doesn't need to come to us.

## Wichelstowe: stranded where you stopped

Some people find no safe spot to pull over whatsoever.

If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge of Langdean Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a routine call for us and not an unusual one.

Remain by the car when it's sensible to be inside, yet clear of the vehicle when it isn't.

Do not start it up to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into the system.

We'll bring the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is far better than pressing on.

Try the drive home from The Wichel Inn? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will pull away just fine, which is the trouble — a diesel on a weakened tank acts typically while wearing down the components your fuel should be protecting. Park the Audi A4 and phone.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

The local M4 is the one which matters here, and lies under a mile from Wichelstowe.

A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are normally lost power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and do not start it to reposition.

Long trip? Anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it passes through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains the usual East Wichel Park call: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that travelled out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts bleeding past gaps instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was built about. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer behaving like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## Where is Wichelstowe?

Wichelstowe is a suburban area in Wiltshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 107 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Wichelstowe lies near the towns of Wroughton and North Wroughton, and is also close to the village of Okus. Wichelstowe is located approximately 26.9 miles from the city of Bath and 71.4 miles from London. Wichelstowe has a population of around 2991 residents.

## What follows when our engineers arrive with you around Wichelstowe

- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.

- Out goes the polluted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that started the problem.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running correctly.

Then it's ready to pull away.

All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Your pump rests upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a worn one sheds travels onward with the fuel — which is why we are firm about not driving on. Phone us, then leave your diesel Citroen C3 where it is close to The StoweAway Community Centre.

## Wichelstowe AdBlue removal is a separate problem

Do not fire it up: that opening instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up instead.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Wichelstowe has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

## Wichelstowe prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Drain it and put clean diesel in — that's the advice you'll get, normally from a person certain, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Hyundai Tucson close to Wish Hounds and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What takes place next is the problem: the motor at once sucks the petrol still waiting in the filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, as emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, which is the difference between the car being repaired and your car just starting.

## Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Wichelstowe

## At a petrol station in Wichelstowe, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big share of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers attend Texaco and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with your car?

Keep the engine turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Wiltshire and in Wichelstowe: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
