# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wickhambrook?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Wickhambrook and the rest of Suffolk. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Contact us so our technicians shall tell you what comes next before you try any more.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not rely on it when it does start. Here is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out the fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — your high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: flicking it on is often enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.

- Do not add diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cemetery Road, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting CB8 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what got in, about how much, and also whether the motor has fired. Those three details settle the full call-out.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel on the forecourt?

Much of this work starts at the pump, meaning a big share of that is completed there.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the station.

At the forecourt, this gets stopped with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages that.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require flushing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

The attendants will usually happily push it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. It is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Wickhambrook and the towns near it

Wickhambrook is a rural village, and our vans get out to the town and to the areas by it on those same rounds: Thorns, Mole Hill, Meeting Green, Coltsfoot Green and Attleton Green.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are only the nearest few, and nearly all locations in Suffolk have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Phone and check instead of presuming — county lines particularly, and wherever your satnav may get wrong.

That map outlines the ground the page spans.

The vehicle does not need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Move the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later — that is what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags at Wickhambrook Primary Academy, a wrongly fuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai is a hassle and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter toward your pump. Let them complain. Give us a call.

## Kerbside call-outs in Wickhambrook

Not everyone has a safe spot to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Landed by the verge of Thorns Meadow, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Clear of the vehicle when it is not wise to sit in it, with it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Leave it overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus parked in the car park at Greyhound Inn degrades while it stands, tank of petrol or not, and this job stays a straightforward one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The question our engineers arrive with is about the trip there: a cold engine over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the engine oil.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The local M11 is the one that counts now, and lies under 25 miles from Wickhambrook.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what we bring.

## Wickhambrook itself

Wickhambrook is a rural village in Suffolk, situated inland at an elevation of around 104 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Wickhambrook lies approximately 54 miles from London and 18 miles from Cambridge, making it a relatively secluded community. Wickhambrook is surrounded by nearby places such as Thorns, Mole Hill, and Meeting Green, which are all part of the local landscape. Wickhambrook has a population of around 589 residents, who live in a quiet, rural setting.

## What our engineers do when we reach you around Wickhambrook

- The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and if the motor has run.

- Our engineers drain your tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running properly.

That leaves it ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

Clearing your Mercedes E-Class, changing your filter where there is a usable one, purging the lines, putting clean fuel through the full system: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of that resting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank by this point. Three things help when you phone from close to Wickhambrook Village Sign — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, so the place itself is hardly ever the issue. A tight parking bay is better than a car driven somewhere more convenient.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Wickhambrook?

Don't start it: that first rule stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and residue instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wickhambrook page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical not careless — practically no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel BMW 5 Series, a fill-up by Wickhambrook Memorial Social Centre that you did not think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anybody spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at the injectors.

## Wickhambrook pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mix is in the fuel filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that got by Wickhambrook Womens Institute needs the circuit purged, not emptied.

## Wickhambrook motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Wickhambrook petrol station forecourt

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more often than people expect.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Leave the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Clearing misfuelled motors, Wickhambrook and the rest of Suffolk, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
