# Willington Square: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet started, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is decided in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. All over Willington Square and the remainder of Tyne and Wear, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

A single ring to us will be plenty: our technicians can explain what follows from here. Try it right away.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Never start the car. Turned on all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle typically will not run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that reversed. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off also — turn it on and you usually prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We'd much rather drive to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort out than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Churchill Street, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode starting NE28 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of turning up.

- Three facts determine the entire job: the fuel you put in, the approximate amount of it, and if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The trip back would roughly double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already put a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So leave the car where it is. Ring us from the platform if that's easier — nobody needs you hovering over the car outside Brockley Whins whilst our engineers get on, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel on a forecourt?

Plenty of this work begins at a pump, meaning a good part of it is done there.

If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's usually where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

The forecourt is the one spot the mistake is caught before the engine has run.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants offer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets through the pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting it four bays does not merit starting the engine.

Easy, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at gentle throttle draws little fuel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane somewhere around Willington Square, a boot packed with shopping, and you sat at Lidl — phone. Leaving that bay is not worth a restart. That tank gets cleared where it sits, your fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and you get home.

## Willington Square and the villages beside it

Willington Square is a residential suburb, so our vans get out to the town and to anywhere around it on the same rounds: Willington, Holy Cross, Howdon, Rosehill and Point Pleasant.

We do come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all places in Tyne and Wear, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Contact us and enquire rather than assuming — boundaries particularly, and wherever your satnav might misread.

The area this page includes sits on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians cover, and none of it needs your car to travel to us.

## Stranded on the kerbside anywhere in Willington Square?

Not everyone gets a decent place to pull in.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Bathgate Close because you realised after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Stay with your car while it's sensible to sit there, and clear of it if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Pressing on causes your car far more harm than a van coming out to an awkward spot, and that's no trouble for us.

This is what a job in the car park by The Jolly Bowman generally looks like. We reach the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, the lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then we fire it up, check it runs properly, and you pull away.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

This is where your A167(M) comes in — under 5 miles from Willington Square.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in the van.

None of it is your engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the normal Tall Trees Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it passes through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built leaks past gaps, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## About Willington Square

Willington Square is a suburban area located inland in Tyne and Wear, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Willington Square sits at an elevation of around 55 metres, close to the nearby places of Willington, Holy Cross, and Howdon. Willington Square is approximately 4.5 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, making it a commuter-friendly location. Willington Square has a population of around 6355 people, with a range of community facilities and services.

## Our visit in Willington Square, step by step

- We establish what went in, how much, and if the engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- The contaminated mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and bleed the system.

- It is run with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running correctly.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

We do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it's very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

## Willington Square AdBlue removal is a separate job

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is unchanged — never fire it up — yet the fault isn't.

Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Willington Square has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

The smaller petrol nozzle slides into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. Strange places see most of that for that reason. So: topped up near Our Lady & St Aidan’s without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and mileage settles how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

## Willington Square costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range.

If it isn't pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Willington Square

## At a petrol station in Willington Square, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then leave it off.

It's fixable much more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later on.

Cold and stationary, a car is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
