# Wiltown: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Wiltown and the remainder of Somerset. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Ring us and then our engineers will explain what comes from here before you do any more.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not start the car. And if started, do not depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Leave the ignition be too. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly enough to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.

- Never thin it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we would much rather come to an odd place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Stoney Lane, put your hazards on then keep it there.

- Before you call, get your location. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting TA10 0 — that is what decides whether our van shows up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has been turned over. The replies determine everything that comes after.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return leg would close to double the figure to no purpose. The Volkswagen Golf can sit outside Bridgwater perfectly happily. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us whilst our technicians work is not necessary.

## At the forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

Much of the job starts at a forecourt, which means a big portion of that gets finished there.

The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that's a spot we work, and often.

At a garage, it gets halted with the engine never fired, and nowhere else manages that.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Accept the help.

Cranking the car over four car lengths? No.

If you've put petrol in your diesel Renault Megane around Wiltown and you are now sat outside Tesco with a boot packed with shopping, ring us. Don't fire it up once more to leave that space. We will come out to you, clear the tank, clean those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle uses very little fuel, which is why these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

## Wiltown plus the villages next to it

The same journeys get us to Curry Rivel, Heale, Drayton, Moortown and Whitecross as well as Wiltown, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all towns in Somerset, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list means nothing about whether we come.

Contact us to ask instead of guessing, above all where you are on the boundary or anywhere the satnav gets wrong.

That map shows the area this page includes.

We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

## Wiltown: stranded where you stopped

Some people have no sensible spot to pull over at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Wiltown as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the normal kind.

Wait with the car when it is wise to wait in it, but out of it when it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that's no bother for us.

## Run it already? Stop, then read below

The local M5 is the road that matters now, and sits under 10 miles from Wiltown.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

Stop somewhere sensible, switch off and call us. Fine on the way out to The Green, gutless on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; weaker fuel seeps past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Mercedes C-Class went, the less of that pressure it held.

## Where's Wiltown?

Wiltown is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Somerset, with a relatively low elevation of 44 metres. Wiltown lies near several nearby places, including Curry Rivel, Heale, and Drayton, and is approximately 16 miles from the city of Wells. Wiltown has a population of around 1136 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Wiltown is also located at a distance of 123 miles from London, making it a relatively rural suburb in the South West region.

## What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Wiltown

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.

- Our engineers empty the tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- The motor is started and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Why we are direct about not driving on: the pump rests before the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses passes downstream with your fuel. Leave the Dacia Duster by War Memorial then phone us.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wiltown

The issue isn't the same, though the opening step is — don't start it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Wiltown page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That is your misfilled Audi A3, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps by Robert Sewers Hall, then leave the restarting alone.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Wiltown

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, because this job is not one job. What changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Wiltown

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Wiltown?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It is salvageable much more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Leave the car switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Wiltown and the rest of Somerset, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
