# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woking?

With that tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. Throughout Woking and the remainder of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Our engineers shall tell you what the following stage is. Phone — this happens before anything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That's why you never crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: turning it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- Do not tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it simply leaves you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on High Street? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started engine.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode starting GU21 6, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the motor has fired — these three replies settle the whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A good part of the job gets completed at a pump, as that's where it usually begins.

Still at Morrisons? Then that's typically where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the site.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the single location this is caught.

Our engineers can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that drew fuel through your filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key are what determine that.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

## Woking plus the towns next to it

Mount Hermon, Horsell, Hockering Estate, Kingfield, Maybury — every one of these on our trips that bring us out to Woking as well, a riverside town.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are pages for nearly all places around Surrey, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Presuming is the thing to resist, especially on a boundary or somewhere your satnav goes wrong. Call us and ask.

This map shows the area this page includes.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians work on, and none of that asks your car to travel to us.

Twenty to nine outside Maybury Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel to demand — and a frantic morning run asks for plenty.

## Kerbside breakdowns around Woking

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone.

Set off, then noticed? Landed on the verge of Chapel Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of your car when it's not safe to sit there, beside it when it is.

Don't restart it to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system.

However awkward the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for the car than pressing on.

Three replies determine most of the work: what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the car in the car park by The Junction Tap. Next the polluted mix comes out of the tank, the lines are flushed, and where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before you pull away.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the local M25 comes into it — under 5 miles from Woking.

A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the signs when they arrive are usually a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never restart it to reposition.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

Fine on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that run to Horsell Moor went, the tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further your Peugeot 308 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off and ring us.

## All about Woking

Woking is a town situated on the River Wey in Surrey, with a relatively low elevation of 37 metres above sea level. Woking lies approximately 22.7 miles southwest of central London, near the neighbouring areas of Mount Hermon, Horsell, and the Hockering Estate. Woking has a population of around 29,114 people, predominantly residing in flat-type housing. Woking is connected to the surrounding areas and London by various transport links.

## What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you in Woking

- The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what got in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- Our engineers clear the tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that started the issue.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- After it is turned on, our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Woking?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this fault underneath it's a different one altogether.

Petrol thins the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Woking page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Clattering? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That's your wrongly fuelled Mercedes C-Class, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe by The Hockey Museum, then leave the restarting alone.

## Woking prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One figure would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach the car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the engine packing up — and with no warning light for it, cars in that position normally get driven a second time before anyone phones. Please don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone dead, idle turned uneven, and a diesel Ford Kuga now sitting by The Wanderer. Turn the car off and call us.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Woking

## Fuel drains on a Woking petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work happens.

Our technicians work at JET and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more commonly than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with your vehicle?

Switched off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists expect.

Throughout Surrey and around Woking: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
