# Wolstanton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Wolstanton and the rest of Staffordshire. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. When the motor has not run and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Phone and we can show you what comes after that before you attempt much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. That is why you do not crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it ignites it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which carries this petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.

- Don't water down it. Diesel put on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would much rather come to a difficult place than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Albert Terrace, put your hazards on then keep the car there.

- Before you ring, gather your position. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning ST5 8 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, about how much, and if your car has fired. Those three answers decide your whole call-out.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through your injection pump in real volume on the trip in, and the drive back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Ring us — the platform is fine. There's no need to stand over your Volkswagen Passat outside Longport whilst the work gets done, and we would very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

A large share of this work is done at a forecourt, as that is where it mostly kicks off.

Still at Asda? Then that's generally where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Before the motor has started — a garage is the single setting this ends up spotted.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines as well as that tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where your car stands. What decides it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the help.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Petrol in your Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Asda, somewhere around Wolstanton? Then phone, and leave the engine out of it — not even to exit the bay. Someone comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines rinsed, new diesel in, and home you go. Light throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

## Service around Wolstanton

Porthill, Dimsdale, May Bank, Basford, The Brampton — every one of these on our journeys that bring us across to Wolstanton itself, a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for most locations in Staffordshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Presuming is the thing to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Call us and enquire.

The patch this page includes sits on the map.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

## Stuck by the kerbside around Wolstanton

The opportunity to stop anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody.

A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Russell Street or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Clear of the vehicle when it isn't sensible to be inside, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

However inconvenient the spot, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and check this

under 5 miles from Wolstanton, your M6 is what counts now.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through — that's the whole mechanism. It explains the normal Wolstanton Marsh call too: a diesel Dacia Duster that drove out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## A little about Wolstanton

Wolstanton is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, with Wolstanton occupying a riverside location near the River Trent. Wolstanton sits at an elevation of around 165 metres, with Wolstanton being close to nearby places such as Porthill, Dimsdale, and May Bank. Wolstanton has a population of approximately 8351 residents, with Wolstanton predominantly consisting of semi-detached housing.

## What our engineers do when we get to you around Wolstanton

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers alter what the work really is.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- What is remaining in your system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so the fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- The engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and parked the diesel BMW 5 Series up by Wolstanton Methodist Church a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short drive truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to your filter and the pump — which is why we purge the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wolstanton is a distinct problem

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — don't start it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Wolstanton page. Both are ours to handle.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — near Saint Margaret's Church or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Wolstanton

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

If it's not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Wolstanton

## Fuel drains on a Wolstanton petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place.

Routinely, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Do not turn the engine back on.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then keep it off.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Staffordshire and in Wolstanton: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
