# Wombwell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the motor. If the fuel is still in the tank and your engine has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, all over Wombwell and the remainder of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Contact us before all else starts, so you will hear what happens after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Whenever you drive, the pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you don't crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically won't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — the high-pressure pump, those injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: turning it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming carries petrol from your tank into exactly those parts.

- Do not thin it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Station Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode starting S73 0 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and the van circling.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, roughly how much, plus if your car has been turned over. Those answers shape everything that follows.

Quarter past eight. A rushed refuel on the road in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then the diesel Renault Megane has stood outside the nearest station for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle where it sits. What matters is the drive in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates your pump and the fuel injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a fuel drained of much of its protection, and no amount of sitting in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the question about distance rather than hours standing, and hence the request to leave your keys be until our engineers arrive.

## Removing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

It begins at the pump, generally. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well.

If you are still at the forecourt at BP, that is usually where this drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

A forecourt is the one location this can be stopped before your engine has run.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the keys.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that's worth doing.

Firing the car just to shift four car lengths is not.

## Wombwell and the towns beside it

Low Valley, Smithley, Hemingfield, Broomhill, Low Laithes — every one of these on the runs that bring us out to Wombwell too, a riverside town.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations across South Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Contact us and enquire rather than presuming, above all if you're on the boundary or anywhere your satnav can't find.

This map outlines the patch the page includes.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

## Broken down at the roadside near Wombwell

Not everyone finds a sensible spot to pull in.

Set off, then noticed? Finished up on the verge of Alma Street, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of the motor while it is not wise to be inside, with it if it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere better and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled.

We'll bring the van to a tricky place without any fuss, and for the car that's far better than driving on.

Chance the journey home from Old Town Hall? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off quite happily, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves usually while wearing down the parts your fuel should be protecting. Park the Volkswagen Touran then ring us.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after some miles

This is where the M1 matters, under 5 miles away from Wombwell.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you phone. What our engineers bring differs.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through, and petrol thins it. That's the full mechanism, and it explains the usual Wombwell Park call: a diesel Ford Fiesta that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

## Wombwell itself

Wombwell is a town in South Yorkshire, situated on the banks of the River Dearne at an elevation of 54 metres. Wombwell lies approximately 10 miles north of Sheffield and is surrounded by nearby places such as Low Valley, Smithley, and Hemingfield. Wombwell has a population of around 15,011 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Wombwell is located 149 miles north of London, making it a significant settlement in the region.

## Once we get to you in Wombwell: what happens

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- Our technicians drain your tank of the tainted mixture.

- What is left in the system should not be what created the trouble, so the lines get purged and the filter cleaned.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and since all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Vauxhall Insignia up close to Wombwell Library a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave the vehicle off. The short drive truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has reached the filter and your pump — which is why our technicians flush the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Wombwell is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — do not start the car — but the fault isn't.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Wombwell page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Wombwell prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the price is listed below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.

- Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there safely?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Repaired and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our technicians flush it, and take your filter off where there's a workable one. Compare that with the certain suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C4 by St Mary and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds plausible. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Questions we hear about petrol in diesel in Wombwell

## Fuel drains on a Wombwell petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work happens.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, then keep the car off.

Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It isn't a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it does not replace what petrol has thinned.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

The motor stays off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more frequently than people expect, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Wombwell and throughout South Yorkshire.
