# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Woodlands? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Woodlands and the remainder of North Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Phone and our technicians shall tell you what happens from here before you try any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Do not start the vehicle — and don't rely on it when it fires up. This is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives away without complaint for several miles. It isn't fine. It is eating into that fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone too. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it lubricates your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Never weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Hookstone Drive, anywhere — an awkward place for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.

- Have your location ready before you ring. A postcode that starts HG2 8 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and our van circling.

- What went in, roughly how much, and also if the car has fired — those three facts determine the entire call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Draining petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

A large chunk of the job is done at a pump, because that's where it often begins.

The drain usually gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the site's consent, that's a place our technicians work, and often.

No place other than a forecourt can it be caught with the motor still unstarted.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

The attendants will generally happily wheel the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing.

Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

## Can our engineers serve your part of Woodlands?

Crimple, Starbeck, High Harrogate, Moorside, Forest Lane Head — each of them on our journeys that carry us out to Woodlands too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most locations across North Yorkshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Presuming is the habit to avoid, above all on a boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles. Ring us and check.

See this map for the ground shown here.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to come to us.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol past the filter and into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at Willow Tree Community Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same motor fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will advise you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. Leave it there, let them moan, and phone us.

## Kerbside call-outs in Woodlands

A chance to pull over somewhere safe doesn't fall to everyone.

If you noticed after setting off and finished up by the verge beside Woodlands Drive, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us instead of a rare one.

Whether you remain with the vehicle or move away from it hangs on whether sitting there feels sensible.

Never restart the motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the system.

However tricky the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than driving on.

Your Audi A4 remains where it is in the car park outside The Woodlands for the whole job, which generally goes like this. First our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work rests on those answers. That tank is emptied of the polluted mix, the lines are cleaned, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and your system bled, the car is fired up and checked, and once it is running smoothly you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

The A1(M) is the road which counts here, and it lies under 10 miles from Woodlands.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what we bring.

## A little about Woodlands

Woodlands is a suburban area in North Yorkshire, situated approximately 10 miles from Ripon and near the larger town of Harrogate. Woodlands sits inland at an elevation of around 102 metres, with nearby places including Crimple, Starbeck, and High Harrogate. Woodlands has a population of around 5184 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## What happens when we arrive with you around Woodlands

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- That tank is cleared of everything.

- Our technicians clean the lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in the system isn't what created the issue.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it is ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

Hardly ever the problem, the location. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a cramped parking bay is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to Woodlands Methodist Church, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Peugeot 3008 gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines purged and fresh fuel put through the whole system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not your tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodlands

Never fire it up: that opening step holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal around Woodlands has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol arriving at the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, close to Great Yorkshire Showground or not, and we will get to the Mercedes E-Class.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Woodlands

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if our van can safely reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Flushed, not cleared — that is what a diesel BMW 5 Series which got as far as St. Aelreds RC Church needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into your filter, the lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with your tank, so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

## Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Woodlands

## Fuel drains on a Woodlands petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is fixable far more often than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then let it stay that way.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled cars, Woodlands and the rest of North Yorkshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
