# Woodstock: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the motor stays off. Stop there.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is generally a simple drain plus a flush, done where the vehicle sits, and what happens in the next few minutes decides that more than anything else.

From now on, in order, wherever you are in Woodstock:

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

First, the following — in this order.

- Take the keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the fuel system, pulling petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, so leave the car alone entirely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of the petrol — it only leaves you with extra of the same blend.

- Being seen comes before the rest near moving traffic: put the hazard lights on, and only then deal with anything else.

- By hand, not under the engine: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the distance.

- Keep your receipt: the grade and roughly how much are printed on it, and they are what our technicians ask about first.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, pull over somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M32, under 5 miles from Woodstock, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.

## Each Woodstock fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If it has never been started:

- Only the tank has petrol in it so far.

- Where your car sits is normally where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- No spot is better, and it's why the first stage counts so much.

Run at all, even for a second:

- From your tank, past the filter, into your lines: that is how far the petrol has got.

- A bigger run takes it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

- Flushing the lines, the fuel filter seen to, and sometimes more: this job expands as the mileage does.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol doesn't.

A tank of petrol, left still, hurts nothing.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that shift the car.

## Woodstock, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A van that circles versus a van that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning BS15 9 is the ideal place to start.

- The street or the car park. A road name is a help — Shilton Close, or wherever you have pulled up.

- Or the nearest landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, such as the one at Sainsbury's.

- Make and model of your car, and the fact it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Woodstock page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far and how heavily.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts want the owner's go-ahead for the work, and sorting it before our engineers arrive is faster than afterwards.

Call 0333 366 0103 then. Writing to is fine as well if it can wait, with your car left at home, going nowhere.

## Woodstock fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Stick to these: well-intended help does the damage during the wait.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.

- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a few yards.

- None of that gets that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.

- Emptying it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond your tank stays where it is all the same.

- Not for the radio, not for your windows: your ignition stays off.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers set this job, which is why the quote comes after them but not before.

- That tank is cleared. The polluted mixture comes from that tank.

- Cleaning the fuel lines comes next, because a motor that ran has petrol past the tank, inside the fuel lines themselves.

- The fuel filter is dealt with. Cleared, or changed where the car has a serviceable one.

- Priming comes once fresh diesel is in.

- First start on clean diesel. When priming is complete, the motor is started and we make sure that it runs correctly.

Until it runs on new diesel, our engineers stay with it.

If it has been noticed soon, long-term damage is very uncommon, and your car goes back to normal use straight away.

## After the fuel drain: back on the road in Woodstock

- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving will do.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was carried out, and so hold on to the paperwork.

- Next time, read the pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
