# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wordwell?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Wordwell or the rest of Suffolk, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our team shall show you what your next stage is. Ring us — it goes ahead of everything else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you don't start the car, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point most people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — turn it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for precisely those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on B1106, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode starting IP28 6, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- What was put in, about how much, and also whether the motor has fired — the three details shape the entire job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The journey in is what pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Standing still has pushed nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, sitting at Bury St Edmunds all day, waits harmless in that tank whilst it waits. Phone us first — before the keys turn.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

The job starts at a forecourt, mostly. Frequently the job finishes at one too.

Still at Esso? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere except a forecourt can the mistake be stopped with your engine still unstarted.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Starting it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

The awkward part is that bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and from time to time a height barrier on the way in that decides whether a technician can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one at Asda, mention how much room there is about you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians cover frequently. Should there be no space to work alongside your diesel Renault Megane, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a couple of seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the blend departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better spot have gradually made a harder job of what was simply a motor standing still.

## Service in Wordwell

Brockley Corner, West Stow, Culford, Flempton, Ingham — all of those on our journeys that bring us over to Wordwell itself, a rural hamlet.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and most towns in Suffolk have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

On the border, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us to enquire instead of guessing.

Look at this map for the ground shown on this page.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is ground our engineers cover, and none of that requires the vehicle to move to us.

## Wordwell: stranded where you pulled up

Some people have no safe place to pull in whatsoever.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Ingham Road since you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you wait beside the car or keep away from it turns on if being nearby looks safe.

Do not restart it to get to a nicer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into your fuel system.

Carrying on does the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to a tricky location, and that is no problem for us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has gone

under 50 miles from Wordwell, the local M11 is what matters now.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and do not start it to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you phone. What we bring changes.

## Wordwell itself

Wordwell is a small hamlet in Suffolk, situated inland at an elevation of 31 metres, and is located near the villages of Brockley Corner, West Stow, and Culford. Wordwell has a population of around 559 people, and its housing stock is predominantly made up of detached homes. Wordwell is positioned approximately 18.6 miles from the city of Ely and around 65.6 miles from London.

## The visit in Wordwell, step by step

- Our engineers establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- Our technicians empty that tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what started the issue, so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- After it is turned on, our technicians confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left the diesel Ford Fiesta up by All Saints a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Ring us and leave the car off. The short drive really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so thinned fuel has reached the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our engineers clean your lines rather than only clearing your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wordwell is a different matter

The problem isn't the same, though the opening step is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Wordwell page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mix than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Nearly nobody knows how full your tank was in a car collected two days ago, and our engineers work that out on site. Do phone the hire or company firm first, though: some agreements want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then ring us about the Volvo XC60 close to West Stow Village Sign.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Wordwell

Honestly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much that tank holds.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a straight answer rather than a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is your system: our engineers flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the confident tip you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with new diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso near Culford Hall and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds reasonable. Then your engine draws the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries in Wordwell

## I am on a forecourt in Wordwell. Can you drain the car here?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians attend Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more commonly than drivers assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to cope with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a dealership, because we drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Do not turn your engine back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Wordwell and the rest of Suffolk, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
