# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wormit? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Wormit or the rest of Fife, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

A single call to us is plenty: our team will tell you what follows after this. Do this straight away.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, never depend on it: the fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Do not tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Bridgehead Place? Hazards on, and leave it there. A tricky place suits us better than a started diesel.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning DD6 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- Three replies settle your whole call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough volume involved, plus whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the trip in. Close to eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Passat has sat at Dundee for three hours. Phone then keep it where it is. What counts is the journey in, since diesel both ignites and — before that — greases the pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles worked your pump on a fluid stripped of a lot of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the question about miles instead of hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are until our technicians arrive.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Most of the job starts at a pump, so a fair chunk of it is completed at one.

If you're still on the forecourt at Shell, that is typically where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's permission.

At a garage, this gets stopped with your engine never fired, and nowhere else does it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and we can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key.

Roll the car out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

## Wormit and the areas beside it

Woodhaven, Gauldry, Newport-on-Tay, Bottomcraig, Kirkton — each of them on our trips that carry us over to Wormit too, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the closest few, and nearly all places in Fife have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Presuming is the thing to skip, above all on a border or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Phone and ask.

Check our map for the area covered here.

The lot is territory we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

## Kerbside call-outs around Wormit

Some drivers find no safe spot to pull over at all.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Mount Stewart Road because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of the vehicle when it's not sensible to sit inside, by it if it is.

Do not restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the mixture further into the fuel system.

Driving on does the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult place, and that's no problem for us.

What we'll ask is if the trip there was short and cold, because that's where petrol is slowest to burn correctly — and anything that does not burn can get past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the parking area at the pub in the village holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades while it sits, and so park the vehicle there overnight and ring us first thing.

## Driven it already? Stop, and check this

Here is where your M90 counts, under 25 miles away from Wormit.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Here's the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Craigshannoch Park call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without complaint and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it leaks past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was built about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where is Wormit?

Wormit is a coastal suburban area in Fife, situated near the city of Dundee and overlooking the Tay Estuary. Wormit has a population of around 1174 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Wormit sits at an elevation of 34 metres, with nearby places including Woodhaven, Gauldry, and Newport-on-Tay. Wormit is located approximately 358.9 miles north of London.

## What we do when our engineers arrive with you around Wormit

- We find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- Away comes the contaminated mixture.

- What is left in the system should not be what started the problem, so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleared.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running smoothly.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Clearing the Audi A6, changing your filter where there is a usable one, flushing the fuel lines, putting clean fuel through the entire system: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of that waiting in the lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from close to Wormit War Memorial — which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual place we work, so the spot itself is hardly ever the trouble. A tight parking bay is better than a motor driven somewhere more convenient.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wormit

The problem is not the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Wormit has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers cover both.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that's a misfuelled diesel BMW X1 telling you what is wrong. Do not restart the vehicle to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, by Wormit & Newport Tennis Club or anywhere else.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Wormit?

What shifts the price is set out below, as the job isn't one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a technician.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Wormit

## At a petrol station in Wormit, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians work at Tesco and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, since our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

The engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it remain that way.

A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers expect.
