# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wye?

Never turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, all over Wye and the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Ring us so we shall tell you what happens next before you attempt any more.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never start it — and never trust it when it runs. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just can't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol usually starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for several miles. It isn't okay. It is eating into the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel has two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it protects your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is commonly enough to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into exactly those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd rather come to a difficult location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Church Street, switch the hazards on and leave it there.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting TN25 5, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what went in, roughly how many litres, and if the motor has been started. Your answers decide whatever comes after.

Nothing about the time since has cost you anything. Fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, so a diesel Renault Megane parked outside the nearest station this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what sucked thinned diesel through your pump was the drive in. Phone before you set off to fetch the car.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel on a forecourt?

The job kicks off at a pump, typically. Often enough the work ends on site as well.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Wye Motors? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere our technicians work, and regularly.

A forecourt is the single spot this is caught before the motor has started.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off at Co-op now. Time passed isn't the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Wye and the areas beside it

The same rounds bring us to Withersdane, Boughton Corner, Boughton Aluph, Naccolt and Kempes Corner as well as Wye, which is a village.

There are pages for nearly all places around Kent, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

Close to a border, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Contact us to enquire instead of guessing.

The area the page spans is on our map.

The car does not need to move to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Kerbside call-outs in Wye

Not everybody has a decent place to pull over.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Churchfield Way because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Remain beside your car if it is sensible to wait inside, and out of the car when it is not.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We'll bring the van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for the car that's much better than driving on.

A diesel Audi A3 sitting in the car park at The Kings Head carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job, right up till somebody drives it home. Leave the vehicle overnight and call us in the morning. Nothing degrades while it stands. What our technicians will want to know is if that drive there was brief and cold, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and what doesn't burn can work past the rings then into the sump.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the vehicle has travelled

under 5 miles from Wye, the M20 is what matters now.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they appear are generally a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Do not start it to move it. Come off at the first sensible junction and turn off.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in our van.

Fine on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that trip to Wye Cricket Club went, the tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the precision components that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further your Ford Kuga travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

## Wye itself

Wye is a village situated on the River Great Stour in Kent, with a mix of old and new buildings, including many terraced houses. Wye sits at an elevation of 46 metres, near the North Downs, and is surrounded by rolling countryside. Wye is located near several smaller settlements, including Withersdane, Boughton Corner, and Boughton Aluph, and is within commuting distance of Canterbury. Wye has a population of around 1638 people, according to recent estimates.

## Our job around Wye, step by step

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Out comes the contaminated mixture.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what created the problem, so your fuel lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- We pour new diesel in and prime your system.

- It's fired up with clean diesel in it, and we check that it is running properly.

Then it's ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been spotted soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## Wye AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this fault underneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal around Wye has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some contracts want the hire firm to approve the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then phone us about the Kia Sportage close to Wye Library, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a motor they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Wye?

What shifts the figure is listed below, as this job is not one job and our technicians cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel in Wye

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Wye?

A large portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers visit Willesborough Kennington Garages and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's fixable a lot more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate issue. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

Never turn the engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining around Wye and across Kent.
