# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Y Bala?

Never fire up the motor. While the fuel is still inside the tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that is decided in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Y Bala and the rest of Gwynedd, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Our engineers can tell you what your next stage will be. Call us — this comes ahead of all else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- While you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you do not start it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.

- Don't weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Cambrian Terrace, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode starting LL23 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- What went in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the car has run — the three facts settle the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a fair portion of it closes.

Still at Henblas Garage? Then that is normally where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the owner.

A forecourt is the one location the mistake gets spotted before the engine has fired.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to go past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key are what decide that.

Roll it out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Moving it four bays does not justify cranking the motor.

We will come to you, empty your tank, clean your fuel lines and put clean diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into your diesel BMW 3 Series around Y Bala and you are stranded outside Co-op Food with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and never fire it up a second time to exit that space. A mile or so at light throttle pulls hardly any of it, which is why such jobs tend to be the easy ones.

## Y Bala and the areas beside it

Y Bala is a town, and our vans go out to the town and to the villages around it on the usual rounds: Rhiwlas, Llanfor, Llanycil, Rhos-y-gwaliau and Trer-Llan.

If yours isn't on that list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all places in Gwynedd, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Contact us to ask rather than guessing, particularly where you are on a boundary or anywhere your phone misreads.

The map shows the ground this page spans.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is territory we work on, and none of that requires the car to move to us.

Shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later — that is what somebody will say, and it's wrong. Sitting on the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai is an inconvenience and nothing worse. Started three more times for courtesy, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, because priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past the fuel filter towards your pump. Let everyone moan. Phone us.

## Stranded at the roadside somewhere in Y Bala?

Not everybody gets a decent spot to stop.

A normal call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Y Stryd Fawr or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Whether you remain with your car or keep away from it turns on whether staying in it is sensible.

Do not fire it up to get to a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into your fuel system.

We will bring the van to a difficult place without any trouble, and for the car that is much better than carrying on.

Try the drive home from Y Cwrt? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off just fine, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves normally whilst grinding the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Dacia Duster and ring us.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

The local M56 is the one that counts now, and runs under 50 miles from Y Bala.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It affects what our engineers bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

## A bit about Y Bala

Y Bala is a town situated on the shores of Llyn Tegid, a large lake in the Snowdonia National Park, at an elevation of 167 metres. Y Bala has a mix of terraced housing and other types, reflecting its history as a centre for the local slate and farming industries. Y Bala is located near several smaller communities, including Rhiwlas, Llanfor, and Llanycil, and is around 24 miles from the city of St Asaph. Y Bala remains a small but distinct town in the heart of Gwynedd, with a population of approximately 1993 people.

## What our engineers do when our technicians reach you in Y Bala

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Away goes the tainted mixture.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed your system.

- The motor is started and checked to be sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away.

Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Y Bala AdBlue removal is a distinct matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this problem beneath it is a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Y Bala has its own page with the detail — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

New locations are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than slapdash: the narrower petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up by War Memorial without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes A-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and miles is what decides how much petrol reaches your injectors.

## Y Bala costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

We can't put one number on this page honestly, because this job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the motor packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, cars in that position typically get driven once more before somebody calls. Do not. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Kia Sportage now waiting near Thomas Edward Ellis Statue. Turn the vehicle off then phone us.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in Y Bala

## Fuel drains on a Y Bala petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big portion of this work takes place.

We attend Texaco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no alteration at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Don't switch it on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

A parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than motorists expect.

Across Gwynedd and in Y Bala: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
