# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Zeals

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Zeals or the remainder of Wiltshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

A single ring our way will be sufficient: our technicians can show you what follows from here. Make that first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition stays off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Chapel Lane? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. A difficult spot suits us better than a started diesel.

- The van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting BA12 6, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both prepared before you dial.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and if the car has started. These three facts settle the entire visit.

Nothing about the hours since has cost you anything. Fuel in a tank is inert, and so a diesel Volkswagen Passat parked at Gillingham (Dorset) this morning is no worse at five than it was at nine — what drew thinned diesel through your pump was the run in. Phone us before you head off to fetch it.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

A good part of this work is done at a pump, as that is where it mostly begins.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at Gulf that is typically where this drain happens.

Before the engine has started — a garage is the single place the mistake is stopped.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Staff will generally help out pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Take the help.

Rolling the car four lengths does not merit firing it.

## Do we serve your corner of Zeals?

Those same runs get us to Wolverton, Zeals Row, White Cross, Bourton and Queen Oak as well as Zeals, which is a rural village.

Not on that list? It says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and nearly all locations in Wiltshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

On a border, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Ring us to enquire rather than guessing.

The map is the area this page covers.

All of that is territory our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. The BMW 3 Series will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Whitesheet Church of England Primary Academy — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while your high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, since behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Zeals: broken down where you pulled up

Not everyone gets a suitable place to pull in.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of New Road since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it's the usual kind.

Sit with the motor when it's sensible to sit inside, and out of the vehicle if it is not.

Never restart the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the system.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward place, and that's no bother for us.

The parts that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and the vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a thinned tank starts and pulls away just fine. Try the trip home from Bell & Crown? Don't. Phone and leave the Peugeot 308 where it stands.

## Driven it already? Stop, and see below

under 50 miles out of Zeals, the M32 is what counts here.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and don't restart it to move it.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring changes.

## About Zeals

Zeals is a small village in Wiltshire, situated inland at an elevation of 143 metres, with a mix of detached homes and rural landscapes. Zeals lies near the Somerset border, close to the villages of Wolverton and Zeals Row, and is approximately 16.8 miles from the city of Wells. Zeals has a population of around 669 residents, living in a predominantly detached housing stock. Zeals is also about 98.8 miles west of London, making it a rural community with some distance from the capital city.

## What our engineers do when our engineers get to you in Zeals

- Our technicians establish what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- The tank gets emptied of everything.

- What is left in your system should not be what started the problem, so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.

- We put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of this wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Dacia Duster left by St Martin barely two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines instead of only emptying that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Zeals is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not fire it up — yet the problem isn't.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal in Zeals has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Clattering? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfilled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps near Visit Hillbrush, and leave the restarting alone.

## Zeals prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether your motor has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank holds.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Zeals motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Zeals petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no.

Your pump still has to live with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is how it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Zeals and throughout Wiltshire.
