AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Aberporth? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens till your motor sucks it round. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where the car sits in Aberporth. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Aberporth: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so don't bin it away.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a SA43 2 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to reposition your car.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Ffordd Newydd.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Aberporth forecourt — the Gulf among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car filled in Rhosygadair Newydd last night and never switched on stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody turns the key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there. A motor left sitting in Aberporth with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. And there's the water: it offers no protection to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Murco, and this issue is diluted fuel. Blended through the diesel and left still, it is no threat at that stage; running your motor is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it can't just be run through. Whether your vehicle is in Blaenporth or the heart of Aberporth, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Ceredigion the vehicle is sitting.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Aberporth: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars waits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside the local primary school. After work, a container is tipped in on a drive near B4333. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside The Morlan.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you are in Aberporth or the remainder of Ceredigion.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Aberporth?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Via your filter, along the lines, and — given any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Maybe returning from Parc y Dyffryn, or part way across Aberporth, your motor may go rough, smoke, drop pace, flash the dash or stall. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M4, under 50 miles from Aberporth, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Aberporth to the car park by Aberporth Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards St Davids, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has come to a stop. Long-term damage is very rare when it's noticed soon.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Aberporth: what it takes

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Banc Presbyterian Chapel, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Aberporth, and the van travels to it. Which fluid went in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the motor has turned over: we check before all else, since those shape the job.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of your vehicle follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step. You drive off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Aberporth or in a bay outside the nearest station. It is checked on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our engineers go. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Aberporth

Not one single figure would be honest, since every job differs. What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Leaping Dolphin.

Before any figure, never after, each call from Aberporth begins with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. With those replies, a range shrinks to a single fixed number.

The quote is given during the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
