Diesel Car Fuel Tank Sizes and Wrong Fuel Help
If you have put petrol in a diesel, or AdBlue in the diesel tank, leave the engine off and ring 0333 366 0103 first. If you want to know more about your own car, find its make below. Each make has a page listing its diesel models, and each model has a page of its own.
What the model pages tell you
Every model page lists the diesel versions we hold figures for, with the fuel tank capacity of each one, and the engines and badges they came with. It also covers what to do if petrol or AdBlue has gone into that car, and what we do when we come out to it.
Why the tank size matters
What counts is how much of the fuel in the tank is now petrol, not how many litres went in. A few litres on top of a nearly full tank is a small part of the total. The same few litres in a tank that was close to empty is a much larger part of what the engine would draw.
That share is what people usually ask about, but the more useful thing to know is whether the engine has run. Running it is what carries the mixture out of the tank and through the pump and the injectors, so a car that has not been started is the simplest job, whatever the share.
AdBlue and your car
AdBlue goes in its own tank on the diesel cars that use it, often with its filler next to the diesel one under the same flap. If it ends up in the diesel tank, the size of the tank does not help, because AdBlue does not mix with diesel and sinks to where the pump draws from.
Petrol in a diesel, model by model
The advice is the same whatever you drive: leave the engine off, don't top up with diesel, and ring before you do anything else. What changes from one model to the next is the size of the tank and the versions it came in, and that is what the model pages are for. When you ring, the make and model are enough for us to start with.
Finding your car
Find your make in the list below. On the make page, pick your model, then look for your version by the name on the badge on the back of the car. If you are not sure which version you have, ring anyway and we will work it out with you.
If your make or model is not in the list, that only means we do not hold figures for it. The drain itself is the same kind of job on any diesel car, so ring 0333 366 0103 all the same.
