Petrol in a Diesel Rover: Tanks Across the Range
Fuel tank size matters when you have put petrol in a diesel Rover. On your car, it determines how much of the mix in there is currently petrol. This guide gives the fuel tank sizes throughout the diesel Rover range, and every model gets a page of its own, linked further down.
Petrol in Diesel drains the car where it sits, however big the tank is, so the advice is to leave the motor turned off and phone us as soon as you know what has happened.
Fuel tank sizes across the diesel Rover range
According to the model and the variant, a diesel Rover has a tank of anywhere from 50 to 65 litres.
On the 45, the fuel tank takes as much as 50 litres.
In our figures, the tank on the 75 takes 65 litres at most.
There are 13 variants among the 6 diesel Rover models we list, and every model has a page giving the tank on every one.
Wrong fuel in your Rover: what a couple of litres means
The proportion of petrol depends on how full the tank was before you filled up. That's because wrong fuel in your Rover mixes with whatever diesel was still in there. When a few litres of petrol are put into a tank running near empty, they form far more of what the engine would draw. On top of a nearly full tank of up to 65 litres, the same amount is just a small part of the whole.
How much petrol is too much is a question people frequently put to us. Starting the engine is what takes the blend out of your tank and through the pump and the fuel injectors, so the more useful point to know is whether it has run.
A drain is normally all the car needs if the quantity is modest.
Engine options in the diesel Rover range
Our figures list CDTI, SDI and TD badges across the diesel Rover cars.
We can tell which one you have from the model name and the badging on the back, so check them before you ring. When you are not certain, phone anyway and we'll figure it out together.
What goes on with AdBlue in a diesel Rover
Tank size does not help with AdBlue. The fuel pump draws its fuel from the bottom of your tank, and that is where AdBlue sinks, so even a small amount reaches the fuel line. If you have got AdBlue in a diesel Rover, the diesel surrounding it doesn't dilute it, since AdBlue is mainly water and does not blend with diesel.
AdBlue does not burn and gives the fuel pump no protection, and as its water evaporates, the urea left behind forms crystals in the lines and the filter.
Under the same flap as the diesel filler there is frequently a second one for AdBlue, with a blue cap and a smaller nozzle, where the vehicle carries a separate AdBlue tank.
Fuel drain on your Rover
However big the tank is on your car, a fuel drain on your Rover clears the lot, just where the vehicle is parked. Fresh diesel goes in after the contaminated fuel has been pumped out and the fuel lines and your filter are rinsed, and then the system is primed and the motor started.
The 25, for instance, carries a tank of up to 50 litres.
Fresh diesel is what your car runs on when this drain is done, so you can drive it away.
The steps in AdBlue removal from a diesel Rover
AdBlue removal from a diesel Rover starts with emptying the tank entirely, as AdBlue collects at the bottom rather than blending in. If the engine has been run, we flush the fuel lines and the filter through as well and change the filter where needed.
This is about AdBlue that has got into the diesel tank, not taking out or turning off the AdBlue system on the vehicle.
Fuel drain on a diesel Rover: what changes the price
We do not give a fixed price, as two call-outs on the same model can be rather different. Whether your car has been run or driven changes it most. After that it depends on how much went in compared with the tank size, whether petrol or AdBlue went in, and where the car is. Call with those details and we can let you know what this job will involve.
Your tank queries on petrol in a diesel Rover
Which Rover diesel holds the most fuel?
Going by our data it is the 600, with up to 65 litres, and the smallest is found on the 200.
Is petrol less of an issue in a bigger tank?
A bigger tank means a few litres form less of the total, but that petrol is still there and still reaches the pump as soon as the engine runs. All of that comes out with a fuel drain, as long as the car is turned off.
Where do I find the tank for my exact version?
Go to the page for your model, linked further down, and each version our data cover is given with its tank.
Is it wrong fuel in my Rover if it's not diesel?
It means anything put into the diesel tank that's not diesel, so petrol of every type, including super unleaded, or AdBlue, which has its own dedicated tank.
