Put Petrol in a Diesel Rover 600?
If you've got petrol in a diesel Rover 600 but your motor hasn't been started, keep it turned off, even to shift it away from the pump. As long as the motor stays off the petrol sits inside the tank, and a drain is normally all it takes to put your 600 right.
We come to misfuelled vehicles rather than the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel the Rover 600 stays at the forecourt or wherever it ended up. Call us before you attempt anything on your own and we'll take you through it.
Petrol in a diesel 600: what to do right away
- Do not start the motor, even though a diesel 600 will generally run with petrol inside the tank. It may seem normal for a while, and that is how motorists frequently drive away without realising anything is wrong.
- Keep the ignition off as well. On plenty of diesels turning it on is enough to start the fuel pump priming, which pulls fuel out of the tank on to the injectors.
- The 600 holds up to 65 litres, so topping up the remainder of your tank with diesel to dilute the petrol only leaves more contaminated fuel to empty out. The same goes for super unleaded, which is petrol too.
- Ask the forecourt attendants when your car is in the way of a pump. They generally help roll the vehicle out of the way once it's in neutral.
- When the badging gives the precise variant, for example the 620 SDi, mention it when you phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know too which 600 you drive and where it is parked, about how much petrol was put in and whether the motor has been run.
Wrong fuel in your Rover 600 after your engine has been run
While it remains in your tank, wrong fuel in your Rover 600 doesn't affect the engine. That only starts once it is pulled out, which is what happens when your engine is started. The high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors on a diesel motor are lubricated by the fuel flowing through them. With petrol diluting your diesel, that protection goes, and driving for any distance on it is then what can do damage.
Find a safe place to stop and switch off, if the 600 has already been on the road. It can still be put right, with the tank emptied and the pipes and filter cleaned until every trace of the tainted fuel has been removed. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is caught soon and given a proper clean.
The Rover 600 fuel tank capacity, by version
The size of the tank counts because the danger depends on what share of your fuel in there is petrol, so the same couple of litres are more of a problem if the tank was almost empty when you filled up.
In our figures, all of the diesel versions of the Rover 600 share one tank of 65 litres, so the calculation comes out the same for every one.
Finding your diesel 600 variant
The version is usually on a badge on your boot lid, and knowing it helps us when you ring.

Put AdBlue in a diesel Rover 600?
Certain diesel cars carry a mixture of water and urea, known as AdBlue, in a tank of its own with a separate filler, and rely on it to treat their exhaust. Pouring AdBlue in the wrong filler leaves you with AdBlue in a diesel Rover 600, so don't turn your key, not even to shift the vehicle.
Even a tank of up to 65 litres won't dilute AdBlue the way it would dilute petrol. AdBlue does not blend with diesel, so it sinks to the bottom, right where your pump takes its fuel, and being largely water it neither burns nor gives the fuel pump any lubrication.
Even a little of that is enough to end up in your fuel lines. As the water dries off, the urea forms crystals inside your fuel system, including the fuel filter and injectors, and it eats into the metal it rests against.
On a lot of vehicles the AdBlue filler sits alongside your diesel filler under the same flap, and if the 600 has one, it may well be there too. AdBlue caps are usually blue and accept a much smaller nozzle than diesel.
The fuel drain on your Rover 600, step by step
There is no garage needed, as we carry out a fuel drain on your Rover 600 at your car itself. On the 600 the tank holds up to 65 litres, so we drain all of it after we have found out what was put in and whether the motor has been run. The fuel pipes and the fuel filter are rinsed next, then we refill with fresh diesel and prime the system before starting your engine.
By the time we leave, your 600 is running on clean diesel again and all set for you to take away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Rover 600, explained
We follow the same steps for AdBlue removal from a diesel Rover 600 as we do for draining petrol. AdBlue collects at the bottom of the tank instead of mixing in, and if the 600 has been run it may form crystals in the lines, so we clear those out as well and replace your fuel filter where needed.
AdBlue removal, as we use the term on this page, covers AdBlue that was put in the incorrect filler and has to come out of your diesel tank. It does not cover taking out or switching off the AdBlue system on the car.
What sets the cost of a fuel drain on the Rover 600
We do not publish a fixed quote, because this work changes from one task to the next. These are the chief things that affect it:
- whether the 600 has been started or driven, which makes the largest difference
- a tank's capacity next to the quantity that went in
- whether it was AdBlue and not petrol
- where the 600 is, and whether we can bring our van to it in safety
Phone with those details and we'll be able to explain what's likely to be involved.
Questions about petrol in a diesel Rover 600
What is the fuel tank capacity of the Rover 600?
All the variants we have data for take 65 litres.
Does topping up with diesel help with a little petrol in my 600?
It is not something we would advise, since putting in diesel does nothing to remove that petrol. It just reduces its share, and the petrol is still in the fuel system once you drive off. Your 600 usually needs no more than a drain when just a small amount was put in, and that gets that petrol out entirely.
Does my 600 need to be taken to the Rover dealer?
There's no reason to take it anywhere. We empty and clean the 600 where it is, and we are independent, with no connection to Rover or any of its dealers.
Is wrong fuel in my Rover 600 covered by my insurance policy?
Misfuelling cover is part of some policies and not others, so look at yours. We'll come out to drain it for you whether it does or not.
What if I pour diesel in the AdBlue tank of my 600?
Don't put your key in the ignition in that case either. The majority of motors give a warning and drop into limp mode if they are driven like that, and the AdBlue system will need draining. Let us know which tank your fuel went into when you ring.
I've already driven my 600. What do I do?
Find a safe place to pull over, then turn the motor off and keep it that way until we arrive. We drain and clean the fuel system wherever you have pulled over, and when it's caught soon like this, long-term harm is very rare.
