Petrol in a Diesel Kia? How Each Tank Compares

Once you've got petrol in a diesel Kia, the size of the tank on your car decides what share of the mix in it is now petrol. We list the tank capacity for every diesel Kia model on this page, and each one has its own page too, listed below.

Whatever the capacity, the guidance now it has happened is to leave the engine off then phone Petrol in Diesel, and we will empty the car on the spot.

Diesel Kia fuel tank capacities

Tanks across the diesel Kia range take between 35 and 80 litres, depending on the model and its variant.

The Venga takes as much as 48 litres.

In our figures, the tank on the Carens holds 58 litres at most.

Between them, the 13 diesel Kia models we cover come in 34 versions, and the page for each model lists the fuel tank for every one.

A few litres of wrong fuel in your Kia, and what they mean

Wrong fuel in your Kia mixes with whatever diesel was already inside the tank, so the proportion that's petrol depends on how full it was when you filled up. In a tank of up to 80 litres, a few litres of petrol on top of an almost full tank is a small part of the whole, and the same few litres in a tank that was close to empty forms much more of what the motor would pull through.

Often, people ask at what point that petrol becomes too much. Whether the motor has been run is the more helpful thing to know. After it runs, the fuel pump pulls the mix from your tank and passes it on to the fuel injectors.

With a small amount, draining your tank is generally enough.

Which engines come in diesel Kia models

Diesel Kia models in our data have CRDi and TD badges.

Engines throughout the range run from 1.1 litres up to 2.9 litres.

Checking the name of the model and the boot badge before ringing is worthwhile, because together they tell us which model you have. We will work it out with you if you're not certain, so call all the same.

Fuel tank size and AdBlue in a diesel Kia

Fuel tank size does not help with AdBlue. The fuel pump draws its fuel from the base of the tank, and that is where AdBlue sinks, so even a tiny volume reaches your fuel line. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Kia, the diesel surrounding it does not weaken it, since AdBlue is mostly water and doesn't blend with diesel.

Nothing in AdBlue burns, and the pump gets no protection from it. Once its water dries out, urea is left in the lines and the filter as crystals.

If a diesel vehicle has a dedicated AdBlue tank, its filler is frequently alongside the diesel one behind the same fuel flap, with a blue cap and a smaller nozzle.

How a fuel drain on your Kia works

The whole tank is cleared in a fuel drain on your Kia, however large the tank is in your car, without the vehicle being moved from where it sits. We pump out the tainted fuel, flush the lines and the fuel filter, and refill with fresh diesel before priming the system and starting your engine.

For the Magentis that is a tank of up to 62 litres.

Once we finish the drain, the car is ready to drive away on fresh diesel.

The stages in AdBlue removal from a diesel Kia

AdBlue settles at the bottom of the tank rather than mixing in, so draining it totally is the opening step in AdBlue removal from a diesel Kia. We also rinse the fuel lines and the filter through if the motor has been started, changing the fuel filter when it needs it.

Taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on your car isn't what this covers. It is about AdBlue that has gone into the diesel tank.

Pricing a fuel drain on a diesel Kia

Two call-outs on the same model can be very different, so we don't publish a fixed price. How much was put in compared with the capacity of your tank, whether it was petrol or AdBlue, and the car's location all count, yet whether the vehicle has been driven or only started changes it most. With those facts, we can tell you what this job will involve when you ring.

Questions on your tank and petrol in a diesel Kia

Which diesel Kia has the largest tank?

Up to 80 litres fits in the fuel tank on the Sorento, the biggest in our figures, and the smallest sits on the Picanto.

Does a bigger tank make petrol less of an issue?

A larger tank means a couple of litres form less of the whole, but the petrol is still in there and still gets to the fuel pump once the engine runs. A fuel drain removes all of that as long as the car is turned off.

Which page shows the tank for my exact version?

On the page for your model, linked further down. It gives each version we hold data for, with its tank.

What counts as wrong fuel in my Kia?

Petrol qualifies whatever the grade, super unleaded too, and so does AdBlue that was intended for its own dedicated tank. Everything other than diesel inside the diesel tank is wrong fuel.
