Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Kia Soul?
The motor is safest left off if it has not been started since you put petrol in a diesel Kia Soul, and that includes moving it away from the petrol pump. As long as your engine stays off the petrol sits inside your tank, and draining it is normally all it needs to put your Soul right.
There's no reason to move your Kia Soul off the forecourt, or from any other place where it came to a stop, since the drain is carried out by Petrol in Diesel wherever the vehicle sits. Ring us before you try anything on your own and we'll walk you through it.
Your first steps after petrol in a diesel Soul
- Don't turn on the engine, even though a diesel Soul will generally run with petrol in your tank. It can seem normal for a while, and that is how people frequently drive away without realising anything is wrong.
- Switching the ignition on is all it takes, on plenty of diesels, to start the fuel pump priming and draw fuel from your tank towards your injectors, so leave that off as well.
- Thinning that petrol by topping up with diesel doesn't help. It just adds to the tainted fuel to be drained from a tank that takes up to 48 litres in the Soul, and super unleaded is petrol here as well.
- Forecourt staff will usually help push the vehicle out of the way in neutral when it's blocking a pump.
- When the badge gives the precise version, for example the Soul 1.6 CRDi, mention it once you call 0333 366 0103. Tell us too which Soul you drive and where it is, about how much petrol was put in and whether your motor has run.
What starting your engine does with wrong fuel in your Kia Soul
Wrong fuel in your Kia Soul only starts to get to your engine when it is pulled from your tank, which is what starting the engine does. The high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors on a diesel motor are lubricated by the fuel passing through them. With petrol diluting the diesel, that protection is lost, and driving any distance on it is then what can do harm.
Where you have already been driving your Soul, pull over in a safe place and switch off. We drain your tank, then clean the lines and fuel filter through until no tainted fuel is left, so it can still be put right. Very few vehicles that are caught early and cleaned out properly end up with lasting damage.
Kia Soul fuel tank capacity
Because the risk rests on what proportion of your fuel is petrol, the size of the tank counts, and a few litres in a tank that was close to empty are a bigger problem than the same in a fuller tank.
It does not make a difference which version you own, as each diesel Kia Soul in our data has the same tank, holding 48 litres.
Working out which diesel Soul you have
The variant is usually on the badging on the boot lid, and knowing it helps us when you call.
Look for CRDi on the badging of a diesel Soul.
All the variants in our list have 1.6-litre engines.
Put AdBlue in a diesel Kia Soul?
To clean up their exhaust, some diesel vehicles use AdBlue, a blend of water and urea that goes in its own tank through its own filler. The key should be kept out of the ignition when you've got AdBlue in a diesel Kia Soul through the wrong filler, and that includes moving your car.
AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the pump takes its fuel from, because it will not blend with diesel. Being mostly water, it cannot burn and leaves the fuel pump with no protection, and your diesel in a tank of up to 48 litres does not weaken it as it would petrol.
Even a little of that is plenty to end up in your fuel lines. When the water has dried off, what's left is urea, which forms crystals in the system, filter and injectors among them, and attacks any metal it touches.
Look under the fuel flap if the Soul has an AdBlue filler, since on plenty of cars it is right beside the diesel filler. The nozzle for AdBlue is far narrower than the diesel one, and the cap is normally blue.
Our fuel drain on your Kia Soul, step by step
We do a fuel drain on your Kia Soul where your car is, and it doesn't need to go to a garage. We begin by checking what was put in and whether your engine has been run, then drain the tank, which on the Soul holds up to 48 litres. After that we flush your fuel lines and your filter and fill up with fresh diesel, and the fuel system is primed before we fire it up.
When we've finished, the Soul runs on clean diesel and you are free to carry on.
Handling AdBlue removal from a diesel Kia Soul
The steps are the same as draining petrol in AdBlue removal from a diesel Kia Soul. If the Soul has been run, AdBlue can form deposits in the pipes, since it gathers under your diesel instead of mixing in. We clear those through too, and swap your fuel filter if it needs it.
On this page, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the incorrect filler. Disabling or taking out the AdBlue system on a vehicle is not what it means.
A fuel drain on the Kia Soul: what it costs
We do not publish a fixed price, since this work varies from one task to the next. These are the chief factors that shape it:
- whether the Soul has been started or driven, which makes the greatest difference
- how much went in against the capacity of the tank
- whether it was AdBlue rather than petrol
- whether the van can easily and safely reach the Soul where it is
Once you call with those answers we can tell you what the job is likely to involve.
Your queries on petrol in a diesel Kia Soul
Your Kia Soul fuel tank capacity: how many litres?
48 litres. Your tank is the same capacity whichever variant you have.
Does topping up with diesel help with a little petrol in my Soul?
Topping up only reduces the share of petrol. None of that is taken out, so it is all still there when you drive off, which is why we wouldn't advise it. The Soul usually requires no more than a drain when just a modest quantity went in, and that gets the petrol out completely.
Is a trip to the Kia dealer needed for my Soul?
There's no need to take it elsewhere. We empty and clean the Soul where it has stopped, and we are independent, with no tie to Kia or its dealers.
Is wrong fuel in my Kia Soul covered by my policy?
We will still come out to empty it for you, covered or not. Check your policy anyway, as not every policy has misfuelling cover.
Diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Soul: what now?
In that case, too, leave the key out of the ignition. Most cars display a warning and go into limp mode if they are driven like that, and the AdBlue system will need draining. Tell us which tank your diesel went into when you call.
I've already driven my Soul. What should I do?
Look for a safe location to pull over, then turn your motor off and leave the car that way till we arrive. Wherever you have stopped, the system is drained and cleaned there, and caught early like this, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.
