Put Petrol in a Diesel Peugeot?
The engine is safest left off when it hasn't been started since you put petrol in a diesel Peugeot, and that includes moving your car away from the pump. At that stage the petrol hasn't got out of your tank, so draining it is usually enough to set the vehicle right.
Your diesel Peugeot can stay on the forecourt, or wherever it ended up, since Petrol in Diesel empties cars where they stand. If you would sooner talk it through before trying anything yourself, ring us. Each model gets a page of its own, listed below.
Your first moves when there's petrol in a diesel Peugeot
- Keep the motor off, and the ignition as well. On a lot of diesels, turning the ignition on is enough to set the fuel pump priming, which pulls fuel out of your tank on to your injectors.
- Watering the petrol down with diesel doesn't help. Filling up just adds to the contaminated fuel that has to be drained from a tank that holds up to 80 litres in a diesel Peugeot.
- If your vehicle is in the way of a pump, put it in neutral and roll it out of the way. Forecourt attendants are normally glad to help.
- The model name, for example the 2008, is enough we need to start with. Phone 0333 366 0103 with it, together with where you are, roughly how much was put in and whether your car has been started.
Wrong fuel in your Peugeot: why the motor matters most
The trouble begins when wrong fuel in your Peugeot is drawn from your tank, and it's starting your motor that pulls it out. Diesel oils your high-pressure pump and the injectors while it passes through them, and petrol dilutes it, which is why driving for any distance on the blend is what can do damage.
If you have already been driving, stop in a safe place and switch off. We can still sort it out wherever you've stopped, and when it's caught soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.
The 508 is no different in this from any other Peugeot.
How big the tanks are across the diesel Peugeot range
In a tank that was nearly empty, a few litres of petrol make up more of the fuel, and that proportion is what counts, so the size of the tank matters too.
Tank capacities run from 40 to 80 litres throughout the diesel Peugeot range.
The largest is on the 605 and the smallest is on the 1007.
The 308 holds up to 60 litres.
There's a page for each of the 23 diesel Peugeot models we hold data for, with the tank size for every variant.
AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot
When you've got AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot because it went in the wrong filler, the first instruction does not change. The key should stay where it is, even when the vehicle needs to be moved.
AdBlue settles to the base of your tank, where the pump draws its fuel, since it will not blend with diesel. Being mostly water with urea dissolved in it, it can't burn and gives the fuel pump no lubrication. Crystals of urea build up in the filter and the pipes as the water dries out, and they corrode the metalwork around them.
A separate AdBlue tank, where a diesel vehicle has one, comes with its own filler, often beside the diesel filler under the same fuel flap. With a vehicle that has one, you can normally tell the AdBlue cap by its blue colour and the smaller nozzle it fits.
Our fuel drain on your Peugeot, stage by stage
We carry out a fuel drain on your Peugeot where the vehicle sits, whether that's on the forecourt or on your drive, so there's no reason to shift the vehicle. We find out what was put in and whether your engine has been run, empty your tank, and rinse the fuel pipes and the fuel filter. Then we fill up with clean diesel and prime the system before firing it up.
A tank of up to 50 litres is what we drain on the 208.
Fresh diesel is what your car runs on when we leave.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot, explained
AdBlue gathers in the lowest part of your tank, so AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot needs more care there, though it uses the same steps as draining petrol. We rinse the filter and the lines through when your vehicle has been started, and replace the fuel filter if it needs it.
This means AdBlue drained out of your diesel tank. It doesn't mean removing or disabling the AdBlue system.
What decides the cost of a fuel drain on a diesel Peugeot
There's no fixed price on this page, because jobs differ. The main thing that affects it is whether your engine has been started or driven. The location of the vehicle matters too, as does the fuel, AdBlue or petrol, and the amount added compared with the capacity of your tank. We can tell you what will be involved when you call with those answers.
