Put Petrol in a Diesel Peugeot 4008 by Mistake?
We'd urge you to leave your motor off if you've put petrol in a diesel Peugeot 4008 and not started it yet, and that goes for moving it off the forecourt too. While the motor stays off that petrol stays in your tank, and a drain is usually all that it needs to put your 4008 right.
We come to misfuelled vehicles instead of the other way round, so with Petrol in Diesel the Peugeot 4008 remains on the forecourt or wherever it ended up. Hold off attempting anything yourself until you've rung us, and we will explain what to do.
What to do first for petrol in a diesel 4008
- Drivers often drive off without noticing anything is amiss, as a diesel 4008 will normally fire up and run on petrol and may seem normal for the first few miles. So keep the engine off.
- Turning the ignition on is enough, on plenty of diesels, to start the fuel pump priming and pull fuel from your tank towards the fuel injectors, so keep that off as well.
- Thinning the petrol by topping up with diesel does not help. It only adds to the contaminated fuel to be drained from a tank that takes up to 60 litres in your 4008, and super unleaded is petrol here as well.
- A vehicle blocking a pump can be popped in neutral and pushed clear, and the forecourt attendants are usually willing to lend a hand.
- If the badge gives the exact variant, for instance the 4008 1.8 I HDi 150, mention it once you call 0333 366 0103. Tell us too which 4008 you drive and where it is parked, about how much petrol was put in and whether the motor has run.
Running on wrong fuel in your Peugeot 4008
The motor isn't affected by wrong fuel in your Peugeot 4008 till it is drawn from your tank, and starting the motor is what pulls it out. A diesel motor depends on the fuel to oil the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors while it flows through them. Petrol thins the diesel and takes that protection away, and that is why it's driving for any distance on that mix that can do harm.
Stop somewhere safe and turn off when your 4008 has already been on the road. We empty your tank, then rinse the pipes and filter through till no tainted fuel is left, so it can still be put right. Very few vehicles that are caught soon and flushed out properly end up with permanent harm.
Checking the Peugeot 4008 fuel tank capacity
What matters is how much of your fuel in the tank is petrol. The same few litres matter more when you filled up with your tank nearly empty, which is why its size makes a difference.
It does not make a difference which version you have, since every diesel Peugeot 4008 in our figures has the same tank, holding 60 litres.
| Version | Fuel tank |
|---|---|
| Peugeot 4008 1.6 I HDi 115 | 60 litres |
| Peugeot 4008 1.8 I HDi 150 | 60 litres |
Which diesel 4008 do you drive?
The variant is normally on a badge on your boot lid, and it helps us to know it when you ring.
Look for HDi on the badge of a diesel 4008.
The smallest motor, 1.6 litres, is on the 4008 1.6 I HDi 115, and the largest, 1.8 litres, is on the 4008 1.8 I HDi 150.
Got AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 4008?
To treat their exhaust, some diesel vehicles use AdBlue, a mixture of water and urea that goes in its own tank through its own filler. If you've got AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 4008 since it went in the wrong filler, don't touch your key, even to move the vehicle.
As it is mainly water, AdBlue doesn't ignite and gives the fuel pump no lubrication whatsoever. It does not mix with diesel either, so it drops to the bottom of the tank where the pump draws its fuel, and a tank holding up to 60 litres does nothing to dilute it as it would dilute petrol.
No matter how modest the amount, some of it is drawn into the line. Within the fuel system the water dries off and lets the urea crystallise, in your filter and injectors among other places, where it eats into the metalwork it sits against.
Check under the fuel flap if the 4008 has an AdBlue filler, because on many cars it is right beside your diesel filler. The nozzle for AdBlue is far smaller than the diesel one, and the cap is normally blue.
What we do in a fuel drain on your Peugeot 4008
A fuel drain on your Peugeot 4008 is done beside your car, so it never needs to be taken to a garage. We start by finding out what went in and whether the engine has been run, then drain the tank, which on the 4008 holds up to 60 litres. Then we rinse your fuel pipes and the fuel filter and fill up with fresh diesel, and your system is primed before we fire it up.
Fresh diesel is what the 4008 is running on by the time we have finished, and you can drive it away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 4008
The stages are the same as draining petrol in AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 4008. Since AdBlue doesn't mix in but gathers at the base of your tank, running the 4008 on it may form crystals inside the lines. Those get rinsed through too, and the fuel filter is replaced if it needs it.
AdBlue removal here means taking AdBlue out of the diesel tank once it has gone into the wrong filler. It does not mean taking out or disabling the AdBlue system on your car.
What does a fuel drain on the Peugeot 4008 cost?
We do not publish a fixed price, because the work varies from one task to the next. These are the biggest factors that change it:
- whether anyone has started or driven the 4008, the thing that counts most
- a tank's size next to the volume that was put in
- whether it was AdBlue and not petrol
- where you are with the 4008, and whether it's safe to bring our van there
With those answers on the phone, we can tell you what the work is going to involve.
Questions about petrol in a diesel Peugeot 4008
Your Peugeot 4008 fuel tank capacity: how many litres?
All the variants we have data for take 60 litres.
Can I top up with diesel if I just put a little petrol in my 4008?
It is not something we would advise, because putting in diesel does nothing to take out the petrol. It just lowers its share, and the petrol is still in the system after you drive off. Draining takes all of it out, and with a modest quantity that is generally all your 4008 requires.
Should my 4008 go to the Peugeot dealer?
You do not have to. We have no tie with Peugeot or any of its dealers, being independent, and your 4008 is emptied and cleaned wherever you have stopped.
Does the version of my 4008 make a difference?
We hold figures for 2 diesel variants of the 4008, and knowing which one you have helps us when you ring.
Will my policy pay for wrong fuel in my Peugeot 4008?
It is worth checking your policy, as misfuelling cover is included in some and not others. Whatever it says, we come out to drain the car.
What happens if I put diesel in the AdBlue tank of my 4008?
In that case, as well, keep the key out of the ignition. The majority of vehicles show an alert and go into limp mode if they're driven in that state, and the AdBlue system will need draining. Do say which tank took your fuel when you call.
I drove my 4008 before I realised. What do I do?
Switch the engine off once you have pulled over somewhere safe, and keep it off till we reach you. We empty and clean the system wherever you are, and if it's caught soon like this, long-term damage is very unusual.
