Petrol in a Diesel Peugeot 5008, and You've Driven It

If you have travelled with petrol in a diesel Peugeot 5008, pull over once it is safe, switch the engine off then leave it off. We can still put it right where you've stopped, and if it's caught early, lasting damage is very rare.

Petrol in Diesel comes out to wherever your Peugeot 5008 has stopped, empties the fuel tank then flushes the petrol out of the system. By the time we leave, it is running on fresh diesel.

Spotting petrol in a diesel 5008

At first, petrol inside the tank frequently changes very little to how a diesel 5008 feels, so the signs appear a few miles further on. Whether your fuel tank has petrol or AdBlue in it, motorists normally notice the following:

  • a loss of power, especially when the engine is asked to pull
  • rough running, or an uneven idle
  • the exhaust puts out more smoke than normal
  • warning lights on the dash light up
  • it cuts out and may not restart

One of these starting after you filled up is reason enough to look at the receipt and see what was put in.

Wrong fuel in your Peugeot 5008: what travelling on it does

The fuel tank holds wrong fuel in your Peugeot 5008 where it is until it is drawn out by the motor. Once the car is driven, it goes through your fuel injectors, the fuel filter and the high-pressure pump. The mixture gets into more of your system the longer the 5008 is taken, because petrol weakens the diesel fuel that protects your fuel pump and your injectors as it passes through them.

That is the reason to stop the moment you can and not complete the journey. Travelling a long way on contaminated fuel is what can do harm, and when a car is stopped early, draining and cleaning are normally all it needs.

Another version of the 5008 is no different from the 5008 HDi 165 in this, and so which one is yours makes no difference.

Fuel drain on a diesel Peugeot 5008

Where you have pulled up

Getting the 5008 anywhere is not necessary. The roadside and outside your home are both spots we come to, so it does not need starting or a tow.

If you're beside a main road, switch the hazards on then wait somewhere out of harm's way, away from the traffic.

When you call 0333 366 0103, tell us where you are, which 5008 it is and about how far you went. If the badge gives the version, like the 5008 HDi 110, that is useful as well.

After it's been driven: fuel drain on your Peugeot 5008

Compared with a drain on the forecourt, a fuel drain on your Peugeot 5008 goes one step further after a drive. Draining your fuel tank comes first. After that we open the fuel lines and flush them through with your fuel filter, so there is no petrol remaining between the tank and the engine. Fresh diesel goes in, your fuel system is primed, and we start the motor to make sure it runs smoothly.

AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 5008 after it has run

If you have AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 5008 and you have driven on it, the signs are usually rough running, smoke and warning lights, and the car may stall. AdBlue does not burn or lubricate, and it settles to the bottom of the fuel tank where your pump picks up fuel, so it gets to the fuel line fast. Its water drying out lets the urea crystallise in your fuel lines and your filter.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 5008

The lines and your fuel filter have to be cleared of the crystals once your tank is emptied, which is what AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 5008 that has been run means. Where the fuel filter needs it, we change it.

A separate AdBlue tank, if your 5008 has one, is left as it is. The work is about fluid in your diesel tank, and doesn't mean removing or switching off an AdBlue system.

Fuel drain on the Peugeot 5008 after driving: what it costs

How far it went and where it has stopped are what mainly settle the price of a fuel drain on the Peugeot 5008 after driving, and petrol or AdBlue makes a difference too. Those details are what we need when you call, and with them we can explain what the job will involve.

Petrol in a diesel Peugeot 5008: common questions after driving

Has the petrol ruined my 5008?

Almost certainly not. With your car stopped soon and the fuel system drained and flushed wherever you have pulled up, which is what we do, permanent damage is uncommon.

Should I drive it home first?

Our guidance is not to. We can empty the 5008 right where it sits, so it doesn't need moving, and each mile driven on contaminated fuel would push it further through the fuel system.

It will not restart after stalling. What now?

Leaving it alone is wiser than having another go, as every try pulls that mixture further through. We start it for you after emptying and flushing it, putting clean diesel in and priming your system.

Does it matter which 5008 I drive?

It helps when you call if we know which of the 3 diesel versions of the 5008 you have, and the tailgate badge says.

Is wrong fuel in my Peugeot 5008 covered by insurance?

We come out whatever your policy says, and some do offer misfuelling cover, which means checking yours after the car is sorted out is worth doing.
