Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Peugeot 3008 by Mistake?

We'd urge you to keep the motor off if you have put petrol in a diesel Peugeot 3008 and not started it yet, and that counts for shifting it off the forecourt too. Draining your tank is generally enough to put the 3008 right, provided the petrol remains in the tank, which it will while the engine is off.

Petrol in Diesel drains misfuelled cars where they are, so the Peugeot 3008 can stay on the forecourt or wherever it has stopped. Hold off trying anything yourself until you have rung us, and we will explain what to do.

Put petrol in a diesel 3008? What to do first

  • Keep your engine off. A diesel 3008 will normally start and run with petrol inside its tank, and it can feel normal for a couple of miles, which explains why people commonly drive away without realising anything is amiss.
  • Leave the ignition off too. On many diesels turning it on is enough to set the fuel pump priming, which draws fuel out of your tank towards the injectors.
  • Filling up with diesel to thin it is a bad idea, even with super unleaded, which is petrol too. The fuel tank in your 3008 takes up to 60 litres, and each litre of diesel put in is more tainted fuel for us to drain.
  • Speak to the forecourt attendants if your car is in the way of a pump. They usually help push it clear after it's in neutral.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103 then let us know which 3008 you have and where it is parked, approximately how much petrol went in, and whether the motor has run. Where the exact variant is on the badging, say the 3008 HDi 150, tell us that too.

What starting your engine does with wrong fuel in your Peugeot 3008

As long as it remains in your tank, wrong fuel in your Peugeot 3008 does not reach the motor. That only begins when it's drawn out, which is what occurs when your engine is started. As it flows through, diesel fuel leaves your high-pressure pump and your injectors lubricated, and the motor relies on that. With petrol diluting your diesel, that protection goes, and driving any distance on it is then what can cause harm.

Pull over in a safe place then turn off if your 3008 has already been driven. We can still deal with it, by emptying the tank and flushing the pipes and your filter till all of the contaminated fuel is cleared. Long-term harm is very unusual when it is caught soon and given a proper clean.

It's the same whatever variant of the 3008 you have, and that includes the 3008 HDi 110.

Fuel drain on a diesel Peugeot 3008

The fuel tank capacity of the Peugeot 3008

Since the risk hinges on what proportion of the fuel is petrol, the size of your tank counts, and a couple of litres in a tank that was almost empty are more of a problem than the same in a fuller one.

It does not matter which variant you have, since each diesel Peugeot 3008 in our figures has the same tank, taking 60 litres.

VersionFuel tank
Peugeot 3008 HDi 11060 litres
Peugeot 3008 HDi 15060 litres
Peugeot 3008 HDi 16560 litres
Peugeot 3008 Hybrid 460 litres

Which diesel 3008 do you own?

The variant is normally on a badge on the boot lid, and it's useful for us to know when you phone.

On the diesel 3008, the badging found is HDi.

Got AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 3008?

To treat their exhaust, some diesel vehicles use AdBlue, a blend of water and urea that goes in its own tank through its own filler. Even to move your car, do not touch your key when you have AdBlue in a diesel Peugeot 3008 after it went into the wrong filler.

The fuel pump gets no protection at all from AdBlue, which is mostly water and will not ignite. It won't blend with diesel either, and drops to the base of your tank, the very location your pump draws from, so a tank holding up to 60 litres won't dilute it.

No matter how small the amount, some of it is pulled into the line. Deposits of urea form in the filter, your injectors and the rest of the system as the water dries off, and they eat into the metal they sit against.

If your 3008 has an AdBlue filler, it could well sit alongside the diesel filler under the same flap, as it does on many motors. You can usually spot the AdBlue lid by its blue shade and the much narrower nozzle it fits.

The fuel drain on your Peugeot 3008, in order

We do a fuel drain on your Peugeot 3008 where the car sits, and it never has to be taken to a garage. On the 3008 your tank holds up to 60 litres, so we empty all of that once we have checked what went in and whether the motor has run. The fuel lines and the filter are cleaned after that, then we fill up with fresh diesel and prime your system before firing up the engine.

You can drive the 3008 away once we have finished, now running on fresh diesel.

What AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 3008 involves

AdBlue removal from a diesel Peugeot 3008 follows the same steps as a petrol drain. When the 3008 has been started, AdBlue can form deposits in the lines, since it settles under your diesel rather than blending in. We rinse those out too, and replace the filter if it needs it.

Here, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the incorrect filler. Switching off or removing the AdBlue system on a vehicle isn't what it means.

What sets the cost of a fuel drain on the Peugeot 3008

A fixed quote is not something we publish, since no two jobs need the same work. It mainly comes down to the following:

  • whether anyone has started or driven the 3008, the thing that matters most
  • the capacity of the tank, set against how much went in
  • which of the two it was, petrol or AdBlue
  • where you are with the 3008, and whether it is safe to bring our van there

Call with those answers and we'll be able to explain what's likely to be involved.

Queries on petrol in a diesel Peugeot 3008, answered

Do you know the fuel tank capacity of the Peugeot 3008?

All the versions we have figures for hold 60 litres.

Can I top up with diesel if I only put a little petrol in my 3008?

We'd recommend against it. That petrol stays in the fuel system when you drive, since putting in diesel only lowers its share and takes out none of that. A drain takes all of it out, and with a small quantity that is generally all your 3008 needs.

Is a trip to the Peugeot dealer necessary for my 3008?

No, we travel to it. The 3008 is emptied and cleaned where it has stopped, by an independent business with no connection to Peugeot or any dealer.

Does it matter which 3008 I drive?

It is useful for us to know which one you have when you call, because we have figures for 4 diesel variants of the 3008.

Is wrong fuel in my Peugeot 3008 covered by my policy?

It is worth looking at your insurance, as misfuelling cover is part of some and not others. Whatever it says, we come out to empty the vehicle.

What should I do if my 3008 got diesel in its AdBlue tank?

Do not put the key in your ignition in that case either. The AdBlue system will need draining, and if your vehicle is driven that way, it'll most likely display an alert and go into limp mode. When you ring, let us know which tank the fuel went into.

What should I do if I've already driven my 3008?

Stop where it's safe and switch the engine off, then leave it off until we reach you. Permanent harm is very rare if it's caught early like this, plus we empty your fuel system and clean it where you've pulled over.
