Put Petrol in a Diesel Suzuki by Mistake?

Anybody who has put petrol in a diesel Suzuki without running the engine should keep it switched off, and not run it even to roll the car clear of the pump. At that stage the petrol hasn't got out of your tank, so a drain is generally all it takes to set the vehicle right.

With Petrol in Diesel, the drain is done where your diesel Suzuki is, at the forecourt or wherever it ended up. Before you try anything yourself, you can ring us. Every model has its own page, listed below.

Petrol in a diesel Suzuki: what to do straight away

  • Your ignition needs to stay off along with the engine, since on plenty of diesels turning it on sets the fuel pump priming, and that draws fuel out of your tank to the fuel injectors.
  • Diesel Suzuki models take up to 70 litres, so filling the remainder of the tank with diesel to water down the petrol only leaves more contaminated fuel to drain.
  • Forecourt staff will generally help push your vehicle clear in neutral when it is blocking a pump.
  • When you ring 0333 366 0103, we want to know which model it is, where you are, how much you think went in and whether the motor has run. To start with, the model name is enough, for instance the Jimny.

Starting the motor with wrong fuel in your Suzuki

As long as it remains inside your tank, wrong fuel in your Suzuki causes no trouble. That only begins once it's drawn out, which is what starting your engine does. The injectors and the high-pressure pump rely on diesel running through them for lubrication. Petrol thins that diesel, so the harm, where there's any, is down to driving on that blend.

If your car has been driven, the right thing to do is pull over somewhere safe and switch your engine off. Very few cars caught soon end up with lasting harm. We come out to wherever you've stopped to put it right.

Every Suzuki is the same here, the Swift among them.

Fuel drain on a diesel Suzuki

Diesel Suzuki models and their fuel tanks

What matters is how much of the fuel inside your tank is petrol, which is why its capacity makes a difference. A couple of litres matter more when the tank was nearly empty.

Tank sizes run from 39 to 70 litres across the diesel Suzuki range.

The biggest is on the Vitara and the smallest is on the Ignis.

With the SX4, the figure is up to 50 litres.

There is a page for each of the 9 diesel Suzuki models we hold figures for, with the tank capacity for each version.

AdBlue in a diesel Suzuki

The first instruction is the same if you've got AdBlue in a diesel Suzuki after it went in the wrong filler. Shifting the vehicle is not a reason to touch the key.

AdBlue is mostly water with urea dissolved in it. It doesn't burn, gives the fuel pump no protection and doesn't blend with diesel, so it drops to the bottom of your tank, which is where your pump draws from. Crystals of urea form in the filter and the lines as the water dries, and they attack the metalwork around them.

Some diesel cars have a separate AdBlue tank with its own filler, commonly alongside your diesel filler under the same flap. A blue cap and a narrower nozzle normally mark the AdBlue filler, if yours has one.

How a fuel drain on your Suzuki works

There's no need to move the vehicle, since we do a fuel drain on your Suzuki wherever it is, at the forecourt or on your drive. First, we find out what went in and whether your motor has run. The tank is then drained, the filter and the fuel lines are flushed, and the system is primed after your vehicle has been filled up with clean diesel, before it's started.

For the Liana, the tank we drain holds up to 50 litres.

Clean diesel is what your vehicle is running on when we leave.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Suzuki

The steps for AdBlue removal from a diesel Suzuki are the same as a petrol drain, except that we take more care at the base of your tank, where AdBlue collects. When the car has been run, we flush the lines and the filter through and replace the fuel filter if it needs doing.

What this covers is draining AdBlue out of the fuel tank, not taking out or switching off the AdBlue system.

What a fuel drain on a diesel Suzuki will cost

There is no fixed quote on this page, as jobs differ. Whether the motor has been started or driven changes it most. How much was put in against the size of your tank matters too, along with whether it was petrol or AdBlue and where your car is. Phone with those details so we can explain what the work will involve.
