Put Petrol in a Diesel Suzuki Ignis?
Anybody who has put petrol in a diesel Suzuki Ignis without running the motor should leave it turned off, and not start it even to move it off the pump. The petrol cannot leave your tank as long as your engine is off, so your Ignis can usually be put right with a fuel drain.
Your Suzuki Ignis can stay put wherever it ended up, forecourt or not, since Petrol in Diesel drains misfuelled cars on the spot. Ring us before anything else then let us walk you through it, instead of trying anything on your own.
The first steps for petrol in a diesel Ignis
- Don't start the motor, even though a diesel Ignis will usually run with petrol in your tank. It can seem fine for a time, and that is how motorists frequently pull away without noticing anything is amiss.
- Switching your ignition on is all it takes, on many diesels, to set the fuel pump priming and draw fuel from the tank towards your injectors, so leave that off as well.
- Do not fill the rest of the tank with diesel to thin it. Your Ignis takes up to 39 litres, and filling it up simply means more contaminated fuel to drain. Super unleaded counts as petrol here as well.
- A vehicle in the way of a pump can be put in neutral and pushed out of the way, and the forecourt staff are usually happy to help.
- Call 0333 366 0103 with the place the Ignis is and which one it is, the approximate quantity of petrol that was put in, and whether it has been run. If you can read the precise variant on the badging, for instance the Ignis 1.3 DDiS, that helps as well.
Driven your car with wrong fuel in your Suzuki Ignis?
Whilst it remains in the tank, wrong fuel in your Suzuki Ignis doesn't affect the engine. That only starts once it's pulled out, which is what occurs when your motor is started. The high-pressure pump and your injectors in a diesel motor are oiled by the fuel flowing through them. That lubrication is taken away when petrol thins the diesel, so the harm, where there's any, comes from driving on the mix.
Find a safe place to stop and switch off, when the Ignis has already been on the road. It can still be put right, with the tank emptied and the lines and fuel filter rinsed until every trace of the contaminated fuel has gone. Very few vehicles that are caught early and cleaned out properly end up with permanent harm.
Knowing the Suzuki Ignis fuel tank capacity
What matters is what proportion of the fuel inside the tank is petrol. The same couple of litres matter more if you fuelled up with your tank nearly empty, which is why its capacity makes a difference.
It doesn't matter which variant you own, because every diesel Suzuki Ignis in our data uses the same tank, taking 39 litres.
Which diesel Ignis do you own?
It helps us to have the variant when you ring, and it's usually on a badge at the back of the car.
All of the versions on our list have 1.3-litre engines.
AdBlue in a diesel Suzuki Ignis
AdBlue is a mixture of water and urea that certain diesel vehicles rely on to treat their exhaust, and it has a separate tank and filler. The key should stay out of your ignition if you've got AdBlue in a diesel Suzuki Ignis through the incorrect filler, and that covers moving your car.
As it's largely water, AdBlue does not burn and gives the fuel pump no protection whatsoever. It does not blend with diesel either, so it drops to the base of the tank where the pump draws its fuel, and a tank holding up to 39 litres won't dilute it the way it would dilute petrol.
However modest the quantity, some of it is drawn into the line. Crystals of urea form in the fuel filter, the injectors and the remainder of the system once the water evaporates, and they eat into the metal they sit against.
If the Ignis has an AdBlue filler, it could well sit next to the diesel filler under the same fuel flap, as it does on a lot of cars. AdBlue caps are normally blue and fit a much smaller nozzle than diesel.
Fuel drain on your Suzuki Ignis: what we do
There is no garage involved, as we do a fuel drain on your Suzuki Ignis at your vehicle itself. Before we fire up your motor, your system is primed and your tank filled up with clean diesel. First comes finding out what was put in and whether it has run, draining a tank that takes up to 39 litres on the Ignis, and flushing the pipes and filter.
Fresh diesel is what the Ignis runs on by the time the job is done, and you can drive it away.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Suzuki Ignis
AdBlue removal from a diesel Suzuki Ignis follows the same stages as a petrol drain. AdBlue gathers at the bottom of the tank instead of blending in, and if the Ignis has been run it may leave crystals inside the pipes, so we rinse those through as well and change your fuel filter if it needs doing.
Here, AdBlue removal means taking AdBlue back out of a diesel tank it was put into through the incorrect filler. Disabling or taking out the AdBlue system on a vehicle is not what it means.
The cost of a fuel drain on the Suzuki Ignis
A fixed quote isn't something we publish, since no two jobs need the same work. It mainly comes down to the following:
- starting or driving the Ignis, which makes more difference than anything else
- a tank's capacity next to the quantity that went in
- what went in, petrol or AdBlue
- the position of the Ignis and how safely we can get to it with our van
We can let you know what this work will probably need once you call with those answers.
Petrol in a diesel Suzuki Ignis: your questions
How many litres is the Suzuki Ignis fuel tank capacity?
All the variants we have figures for take 39 litres.
Can I fill up with diesel if I just put a little petrol in my Ignis?
We would recommend against it. The petrol remains in your system when you drive, since adding diesel only lowers its share and takes out none of that. All of it comes out with a drain, which for a modest quantity is usually everything the Ignis requires.
Do I have to take my Ignis to the Suzuki dealer?
No, we come to it. Your Ignis is emptied and cleaned wherever it is parked, by an independent business with no link to Suzuki or any dealer.
Am I insured for wrong fuel in my Suzuki Ignis?
Misfuelling cover comes with some policies and not others, so look at yours. We'll come out to empty it for you whether it does or not.
What happens if I pour diesel in the AdBlue tank of my Ignis?
Do not put the key in the ignition then either. If it's driven like that, a vehicle will usually display a warning and go into limp mode. The AdBlue system needs draining too. When you ring, tell us which tank your fuel went into.
Already driven my Ignis: what do I do?
Pull over where it's safe and switch your motor off, then keep it off until we get to you. Lasting harm is very unusual when it's caught early like this, plus we drain the fuel system and clean it where you have pulled over.
