Petrol in a Diesel Isuzu: Driven It Already?

Pulling in the moment it is safe comes first when you've driven with petrol in a diesel Isuzu, and then the motor is switched off and is left off. It is very rare for damage to last when the problem is spotted soon, and we can still put it right wherever you have stopped.

Wherever your car has ended up, Petrol in Diesel travels out to it. We drain your tank and clear the petrol out of the system, leaving it running on clean diesel again.

Symptoms of petrol in a diesel Isuzu

For the first couple of miles, petrol in the tank frequently makes little difference to how a diesel car drives, so the signs tend to show up later. These are most often spotted when the tank has AdBlue or petrol in it:

  • a loss of power from the motor, particularly whenever you ask it to pull
  • it ticks over unsteadily or runs roughly
  • smoke from the exhaust that's heavier than normal
  • one or more warning lamps come on
  • the motor stalls, and a restart might not work

Checking the receipt tells you what got in, and that is useful when any of these started after you filled up.

What happens if you drive on wrong fuel in your Isuzu

Driving is what takes wrong fuel in your Isuzu through your fuel filter, your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Until the engine draws it out, it stays in the fuel tank. Diesel lubricates your fuel pump and your fuel injectors as it flows through, and petrol thins it, so the further the vehicle goes, the more of the fuel system that mixture hits.

That is the reason to stop as soon as you can rather than complete the trip. Harm, when it happens, comes from driving a long way on mixed fuel, and a drain and a clean are usually all a car needs if it's stopped early.

Staying where you have pulled up

The car can remain exactly where it is. You can leave it at the side of the road or outside your home while we travel to it, without starting it or organising a recovery truck.

Turn on your hazard lights if the road beside you is fast, then choose a safe place to wait, well away from the traffic.

When you phone 0333 366 0103, let us know where you are, what model it is and roughly how far you went. We can begin with only the model name, such as the D-Max.

Fuel drain on your Isuzu once you have driven on it

There is a step more to a fuel drain on your Isuzu after driving than to a drain on the forecourt. We drain the tank first, then open the fuel lines and flush them through with your filter, so that no petrol is left between the fuel tank and the engine. To check it runs correctly, we fire up the motor once fresh diesel has gone in and the fuel system is primed.

AdBlue in a diesel Isuzu after it has run

If you have AdBlue in a diesel Isuzu and have driven on it, the symptoms are usually uneven running, smoke and warning lamps, and the car may stall. AdBlue doesn't burn or lubricate, and it drops to the bottom of the tank where the fuel pump picks up fuel, so it reaches the fuel line fast. As its water dries, the urea forms crystals in the fuel lines and the filter.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Isuzu

We change your fuel filter if it needs it as part of AdBlue removal from a diesel Isuzu that has been run, after emptying the fuel tank and clearing the crystals from the filter and the fuel lines.

Only your diesel tank is dealt with here. Where your car has its own AdBlue tank, it is left as it is, and the AdBlue system is not removed or switched off.

Diesel Isuzu tanks through the range

Diesel Isuzu tanks go from 76 to 80 litres over the line-up.

Each version and its fuel tank is shown on its model's page further down, one page for each of the 2 diesel Isuzu models we cover.

After a drive, what does a fuel drain on a diesel Isuzu cost?

Whether it was petrol or AdBlue changes the price too, but most of that rests on the miles your car covered and the place it stopped. What this job will need is something we can tell you once we have those details from your call.

Petrol in a diesel Isuzu: questions after driving

Is the damage to my Isuzu permanent?

Lasting damage is very unlikely. It is rare when your car is stopped early and the system is drained and cleaned, which is what we do where you have pulled up.

Should I drive it home first?

Our suggestion would be not to. Contaminated fuel gets deeper into your fuel system with each mile, and the vehicle can be drained where it is, with no need to move it.

Stalled, and it will not restart: what should I do?

Please leave the vehicle instead of having another go, because each attempt draws more of that blend through. We prime the fuel system and get it started for you after it has been emptied and rinsed and clean diesel is in.

Is wrong fuel in my Isuzu covered by my policy?

Some policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours once the car is dealt with. We come out regardless.
