Petrol in a Diesel Isuzu D-Max? Start With the Tank

If you have got petrol in a diesel Isuzu D-Max, the size of its tank is among the first things worth knowing, because it determines how much of what is in there is now petrol. Every version of the Isuzu D-Max we have figures for is set out on this page with its tank capacity, and the same goes for the motors it was sold with.

The advice doesn't vary with the figure after it has happened. Ring Petrol in Diesel with the motor switched off. We'll come to you to empty the car just where it is.

Does a little volume of wrong fuel in your Isuzu D-Max count?

Whatever diesel is already in the tank mixes with the wrong fuel in your Isuzu D-Max, and how full the tank was when you refuelled determines how much of that blend is petrol. When a couple of litres of unleaded go into a tank running close to empty, they make up a much greater share of what your engine would draw. Added to an almost full tank of up to 76 litres, the same quantity is only a minor share of the whole.

Motorists often wonder how much petrol is too much. It's more useful to check whether the motor has been run, as a running engine is what carries the mixture from your tank and through your pump and your injectors.

Getting it emptied is the safe course whatever the proportion is. If the quantity is small, your D-Max normally needs nothing more than that.

The engines in the diesel D-Max

Your engine in your D-Max is given in the version name on the badge. Check it before you ring.

The engines run from 2.5 litres in the D-Max 2.5 Space Cab 4WD up to 3.0 litres in the D-Max 3.0 Double Cab 4WD.

Within the D-Max versions in the figures are Double Cab ones.

If you are not certain which version you have, call all the same and we will work it out together.

Fuel tank size and AdBlue in a diesel Isuzu D-Max

With AdBlue, tank size plays out differently. With AdBlue in a diesel Isuzu D-Max, your diesel already inside the tank doesn't dilute it. Being mainly water, AdBlue stays separate from the diesel and sinks to the bottom, which is where your pump pulls from. Even a small quantity ends up in your fuel lines.

AdBlue gives the pump no lubrication and won't combust. Its water evaporates as it sits, leaving urea that crystallises in the filter and the lines, where it attacks the metal it sits against.

A second tank with its own filler holds the AdBlue on some diesel cars, commonly beside the diesel filler under the same fuel flap. On any D-Max with an AdBlue filler, a blue cap usually marks it, and that cap fits a slimmer pump nozzle than the diesel one.

Fuel drain on your Isuzu D-Max

Carried out where your car is standing, a fuel drain on your Isuzu D-Max clears the whole tank, whatever size it is on your version. Clean diesel is put in once the contaminated fuel gets pumped out and your fuel lines and the filter are cleaned, and then the fuel system is primed and the motor started.

Still on the forecourt or sitting on your drive, your D-Max can be drained just the same. You can take it away once the drain is finished, and it will be running on clean diesel.

AdBlue removal from a diesel Isuzu D-Max, explained

With AdBlue lying at the bottom of your tank rather than blended in, AdBlue removal from a diesel Isuzu D-Max starts by draining your tank fully. Where your engine has run, we rinse the lines and your filter through as well and replace the fuel filter if it needs it.

What this covers is AdBlue that ended up in the diesel tank, not removing or switching off the AdBlue system on your car.

How the quote of a fuel drain on the Isuzu D-Max is worked out

There is no fixed price listed here, since call-outs on one model can vary quite a lot. Whether the D-Max has been run or driven changes it most. After that it depends on how much got in against the fuel tank size, whether petrol or AdBlue got in, and the car's location.

Those details are what we need to explain what the work involves. Ring with them ready.

Queries on the tank and petrol in a diesel Isuzu D-Max

What does the Isuzu D-Max fuel tank capacity amount to?

76 litres, with each version we have data for using the same tank.

With a larger tank, is petrol less of a problem?

A bigger tank means a couple of litres make up less of the total, but the petrol is still in there and still gets to your pump once the engine runs. All of that comes out with a fuel drain, as long as your D-Max is turned off.

Do you list more than one diesel D-Max?

We hold data for 6 diesel versions of the D-Max, and you can spot yours in the table above by the model name on the badge.

Which fuels, other than diesel, would be wrong fuel in my Isuzu D-Max?

Petrol counts whatever the type, super unleaded included, and so does AdBlue that was intended for its own separate tank. Anything other than diesel in the diesel tank is wrong fuel.

Wherever the Isuzu D-Max is, can you drain the vehicle?

There's no need to shift or start the car. Whether it's parked at home or still at the station forecourt, we travel to it.
