Have You Put Petrol in a Diesel Fiat?
If you have got petrol in a diesel Fiat and your motor hasn't been run, keep the car switched off, including to move it away from the pump. At that stage the petrol hasn't left the tank, so draining it is usually enough to set your vehicle right.
Wherever a diesel Fiat has ended up, forecourt included, Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot. Before you try anything on your own, you can call us. Every model has its own page, linked below.
Put petrol in a diesel Fiat? Do this first
- Leave the engine off, and your ignition as well. On many diesels, turning the ignition on is enough to start the fuel pump priming, which draws fuel from your tank towards your injectors.
- Do not fill the rest of the tank with diesel to thin it. Diesel Fiat models take up to 80 litres, and topping up just leaves more tainted fuel to drain.
- A car in the way of a pump can be popped in neutral and pushed clear, and the forecourt attendants are normally happy to help.
- Once you phone 0333 366 0103, we need to know which model it is, where you are, how much you think was put in and whether your engine has been started. At first, the model name is enough, for example the Idea.
Wrong fuel in your Fiat: why your motor matters most
The trouble starts once wrong fuel in your Fiat is drawn out of your tank, and it's starting the engine that pulls it out. Petrol thins the diesel that lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors while it flows through them, and that is why any real distance driven on that mix can cause harm.
Find somewhere safe to pull in and switch off, when you have already been driving. We can still sort it out where you've stopped, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.
Each Fiat is the same here, the Punto included.
How large the tanks are in the diesel Fiat range
In a tank that was almost empty, a few litres of petrol make up more of the fuel, and that share is what matters, so the size of your tank makes a difference.
Across the diesel Fiat range, tanks go from 30 to 80 litres.
Through the range, the Panda has the smallest tank and the Ulysse the biggest.
The Linea takes up to 45 litres.
Each of the 20 diesel Fiat models in our data has its own page, listing the tank for each variant.
Got AdBlue in a diesel Fiat?
When you've got AdBlue in a diesel Fiat after it went into the wrong filler, the first step does not change. Shifting your car isn't a reason to touch your key.
The fuel pump gets no lubrication from AdBlue, which is mostly water carrying dissolved urea and will not burn. It will not blend with diesel either, so it settles under your diesel inside the tank, down where your pump draws from. Once the water dries, the urea forms crystals in the lines and the fuel filter and eats into the metal around it.
On diesel vehicles carrying AdBlue in a tank of its own, the AdBlue filler often sits next to your diesel filler, the two under one fuel flap. With a vehicle that has one, you can generally spot the AdBlue cap by its blue colour and the smaller nozzle it fits.
Our fuel drain on your Fiat, stage by stage
We carry out a fuel drain on your Fiat where the car is, whether that's at the forecourt or on your drive, so there's no reason to shift the car. We confirm what went in and whether your engine has been run, empty the tank, and flush the fuel pipes and the filter. Then we fill up with fresh diesel and prime the system before starting the vehicle.
On the Grande Punto, this means draining a tank of up to 45 litres.
The job finishes with your car running on clean diesel.
AdBlue removal from a diesel Fiat
AdBlue settles in the bottom of the tank, so AdBlue removal from a diesel Fiat takes more care there, though it follows the same steps as draining petrol. If your car has been run, we clear the lines and the filter through and replace the fuel filter where needed.
The AdBlue system isn't removed or disabled here. The term means taking AdBlue out of your diesel tank.
What a fuel drain on a diesel Fiat will cost
Jobs vary, so this page gives no fixed quote. Whether the motor has been started or driven changes it more than anything. It matters too whether it took petrol or AdBlue, where the car is, and what share of your tank it filled. We can tell you what will be involved when you phone with those answers.
