Every Tank in the Range: Petrol in a Diesel Smart

Anyone who has put petrol in a diesel Smart wants to know the capacity of the tank on their car, because that settles how much petrol is now in that blend. We set out the tank size for each diesel Smart model on this page, and each one has a separate page too, linked below.

Whatever the size, the advice after it has happened is to keep the motor off then phone Petrol in Diesel, and we will drain the vehicle where it stands.

What every diesel Smart takes in its fuel tank

Fuel tanks throughout the diesel Smart range take anywhere between 22 and 47 litres, according to the model and its version.

We list 2 diesel Smart models in 6 variants in all, and each model page shows the tank for every one.

Does a small amount of wrong fuel in your Smart count?

How full your tank was when you filled up determines the share of petrol, as wrong fuel in your Smart mixes with whatever diesel was still there. When a few litres of petrol go into a tank sitting close to empty, they form much more of what the motor takes in. On top of a nearly full tank of up to 47 litres, the same quantity is just a small share of the whole.

Frequently, drivers want to know at what point that petrol gets to be too much. Whether the motor has been run is the more useful point to find out. Once it runs, the fuel pump draws that mixture from your tank and pushes it on to the injectors.

For a small quantity, emptying your tank is usually enough.

What goes on with AdBlue in a diesel Smart

A bigger tank does not help with AdBlue. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Smart, the diesel surrounding it cannot thin it, because AdBlue is largely water and does not blend with diesel. It settles to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel pump draws from, so even a small quantity reaches the fuel line.

AdBlue does not ignite and gives the fuel pump no protection, and as its water evaporates, the urea left behind forms crystals in the lines and the fuel filter.

Where a diesel vehicle has a separate AdBlue tank, its filler is frequently next to the diesel one behind the same fuel flap, with a blue cap and a narrower nozzle.

What a fuel drain on your Smart involves

The entire tank is emptied in a fuel drain on your Smart, however large the tank is on your car, without the car being moved from where it sits. Drawing out the contaminated fuel comes first, then a rinse of the fuel lines and the filter. Then we refill with fresh diesel, prime the fuel system and fire up the engine.

You can drive the car away after this drain is finished, running on fresh diesel.

The steps in AdBlue removal from a diesel Smart

With AdBlue lying at the base of your tank instead of being blended in, AdBlue removal from a diesel Smart starts by emptying your tank totally. If the motor has been run, we flush the fuel lines and your filter through as well and replace the filter if it needs it.

Removing or turning off the AdBlue system on your car is not what this is about. It is about AdBlue that has got into the diesel tank.

How the price of a fuel drain on a diesel Smart is worked out

Two call-outs on the same model can be very different, so we don't give a fixed price. Whether your car has been started or driven affects it most. After that it rests on how much went in against the size of the tank, whether petrol or AdBlue went in, and where your car is. Call with those facts and we can tell you what this job will take.

Questions on your tank and petrol in a diesel Smart

What diesel Smart car has the largest fuel tank?

Up to 47 litres fits into the tank on the Forfour, the biggest in our figures, and the smallest sits on the Fortwo.

With a bigger tank, is petrol less of a worry?

That petrol is still there in a larger tank, and still gets to the fuel pump when the motor runs, even though a couple of litres make up less of the whole. A drain removes all of that while the vehicle stays switched off.

How do I find the tank size for my exact version?

Open the page for your car, linked further down, and each version our data cover is given with its tank.

What counts as wrong fuel in my Smart?

Just diesel belongs in the diesel tank. Petrol of any grade, super unleaded too, is wrong fuel, and so is AdBlue, which belongs in a tank of its own.
