Petrol in a Diesel Nissan: Tanks Across the Range

Tank size counts once you've got petrol in a diesel Nissan. On your model, it settles how much of the fuel in there is now petrol. Our guide gives the tank sizes throughout the diesel Nissan range, and every model has a page of its own, linked below.

The capacity does not change the advice. Once it has happened, leave the motor off then phone Petrol in Diesel, and we'll come to drain your car where it stands.

What each diesel Nissan takes in its tank

Depending on the model and its version, a diesel Nissan carries a fuel tank of anywhere from 42 to 95 litres.

For the X-Trail, the biggest tank takes 65 litres.

On the Qashqai the biggest fuel tank in our data is 65 litres.

Between them, the 17 diesel Nissan models we cover span 64 variants, and the page for every model shows the fuel tank for each one.

Does a tiny quantity of wrong fuel in your Nissan matter?

The proportion of petrol depends on how full the tank was before you filled up. That's because wrong fuel in your Nissan mixes with whatever diesel is already in there. In a tank of up to 95 litres, a couple of litres of petrol on top of a nearly full tank makes up a minor part of the total, and the same few litres in a tank that was nearly empty makes up far more of what the motor would draw.

Motorists often wonder how much petrol is too much. The more useful thing to know is whether the motor has run, because running it is what moves the mixture out of your tank and through the fuel pump and the injectors.

A drain is usually all your car requires when the quantity is modest.

Engines in the diesel Nissan range

Diesel Nissan cars in our data have dCi, TD and TDI badges.

The smallest engine in the range is 1.5 litres and the biggest is 3.0 litres.

We can tell which one you have from the model name and the badging on the back, so read them before you phone. When you're not certain, call all the same and we will figure it out together.

What goes on with AdBlue in a diesel Nissan

A bigger tank does not help with AdBlue. The fuel pump takes its fuel from the bottom of your tank, and that is where AdBlue settles, so even a small volume gets into the fuel line. If you have AdBlue in a diesel Nissan, the diesel around it doesn't weaken it, because AdBlue is mostly water and doesn't blend with it.

AdBlue gives the pump no protection and won't ignite. Its water dries out as it sits, leaving urea that forms crystals in the filter and the lines.

Behind the same fuel flap as the diesel filler there is frequently a separate one for AdBlue, with a blue filler cap and a narrower nozzle, if the vehicle has a separate AdBlue tank.

How a fuel drain on your Nissan works

Carried out where the vehicle is sitting, a fuel drain on your Nissan clears the whole tank, whatever size the tank is on your model. Pumping out the tainted fuel comes first, then a flush of the fuel lines and the fuel filter. Then we top up with fresh diesel, prime the fuel system and fire up your engine.

The Murano, for example, carries a fuel tank holding up to 82 litres.

When we finish this drain, your car is ready to drive away on clean diesel.

The steps in AdBlue removal from a diesel Nissan

AdBlue removal from a diesel Nissan begins with emptying the tank fully, since AdBlue gathers at the base instead of blending in. Where the engine has been run, the lines and the filter are flushed through too, and the filter is changed if necessary.

This is about AdBlue that has got into the diesel tank, not removing or disabling the AdBlue system on the vehicle.

Fuel drain on a diesel Nissan: what changes the cost

We do not publish a fixed price, as two jobs on the same model can be quite different. How much was put in compared with the size of your tank, whether it was petrol or AdBlue, and the car's location all count, but whether your car has been driven or only started changes it most. Call with those details and we can tell you what this job will need.

Petrol in a diesel Nissan: tank questions

Which Nissan diesel holds the most fuel?

Our data put the biggest tank on the Patrol, which holds up to 95 litres, and the smallest on the Micra.

Does petrol matter less in a bigger tank?

That petrol is still there in a larger tank, and still gets to the pump once your engine runs, even though a couple of litres form less of the total. All of that is cleared with a drain, as long as the vehicle is turned off.

Where do I find the tank for my exact version?

On the page for your car, listed further down. It gives every version we have data for, with its tank size.

Which fuels, other than diesel, would be wrong fuel in my Nissan?

Just diesel goes in the diesel tank. Petrol of every grade, super unleaded included, is wrong fuel, and so is AdBlue, which belongs in a tank of its own.
