Acton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition too. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts till your engine sucks it round. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where the car sits in Acton. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps right now, Acton: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so don't throw it away.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting CO10 0, or just the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Don't:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your engine remains off.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch down Barrow Hill is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not worth trying.

On a forecourt in Acton, whether it's the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car away from the pump. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks. A car filled on a drive in Great Waldingfield overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel systems, working on whatever it touches till it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels. A car left standing in Acton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Acton

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Whether your vehicle is in Upsher Green or the heart of Acton, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever around Suffolk the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

Acton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one means it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Acton Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Gotsfield Close. Otherwise, in dim light by The Crown, your vehicle gets topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars see it the most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare car in a family with both fuel types. Anywhere in Suffolk, Acton included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Acton?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. The filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Ash Fenn, say, or midway across Acton. When safe, stop then turn it off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M11, under 25 miles from Acton, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Acton to park beside Acton Village Sign and a drive of under 15 miles towards Colchester are such different jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Acton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Acton — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by Acton Village Hall — our van travels to the vehicle. The work rests on three replies, and our technicians ask for first — what got in, the quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel. Then our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by Sudbury Suffolk or a driveway in Acton. Before we leave, our engineers make sure it's running smoothly with clean diesel in. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

About Acton

Acton is a small town in Suffolk, situated inland at an elevation of 58 metres, with a mix of detached housing and other residential properties. Acton lies near the larger town of Sudbury and the city of Colchester, and is surrounded by smaller villages and hamlets such as Acton Place and Cuckoo Tye. Acton has a population of around 1850 people and is approximately 54 miles from London. Acton remains a quiet, rural community with a strong sense of local identity.

Acton and Suffolk: AdBlue drains across the area

Acton Place, Cuckoo Tye and Newmans Green are among the towns near Acton that the same vans reach, along with much of Suffolk beyond, over the CO postcode area. If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Acton is a town, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

Acton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, so not one single price would be fair. Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind All Saints.

That is why every call from Acton starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. Their replies shrink the range right down to a single figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is on the way, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

Alongside the car in Acton, still?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car. Ignition off, motor off, keys out. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Acton or wherever in Suffolk, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if the engine ran.
