AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Airedale? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition too. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Airedale. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Airedale: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Remove your keys, and that prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WF10 3, or the name of the closest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Don't:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your car.
  • Turning your key to ignition by itself sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's wasted.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Elizabeth Drive.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Airedale filling station — the Texaco included — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its supply from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Water Fryston overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle sitting around Airedale. Only in that tank, it stays stable. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running past them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Airedale

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Applegreen and you have a fault of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Holmfield or the middle of Airedale.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Yorkshire the vehicle is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Airedale: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can appear the same. Nobody means it. Mostly it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. The refill gets hurried outside Fairburn View Primary School, Castleford, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in. Someone tips the container in outside their house, just off Fryston Road, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark outside The Green Bowling Club, your car is topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet motor, or the other car in a home with both fuel types — the vehicles people use least. Wherever in West Yorkshire, Airedale included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Airedale?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Through the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any might show up, perhaps part way across Airedale or returning from The James Backhouse Memorial Garden. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the A1(M), under a mile from Airedale, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Airedale to the car park by Airedale Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Wakefield, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Caught early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Airedale?

Anywhere it has stopped in Airedale — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Gospel Hall — the van comes to the vehicle. Which fluid went in, about how much, and if the engine has turned over: we check before all else, because those decide the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when that tank is emptied, right there. Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if your motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Glasshoughton or on a driveway around Airedale. Before we leave, our engineers check it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Airedale

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind The Airedale Centre.

That's why each call from Airedale starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before anyone leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
