Albany: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: if the motor has run since it was put in. If it hasn't, keep it that way, whether the car is in Albany itself or out in Blackfell. Ring 0333 366 0103 with the key and motor both off. Across Albany, such a case is generally emptied and cleaned where it stands. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Stage one stays the same, even if the job grows.

Find the situation below that matches yours, wherever in Tyne and Wear it happened.

On a Albany forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

The cap you opened was the wrong one — and you only notice it as you're standing at the petrol pump, bottle or the nozzle in your hand. Perhaps you're at the the nearest petrol station, perhaps at the Sainsbury's, maybe somewhere else in Albany.

What it means: this is the best place to find out. Nothing has pulled it in, and so the AdBlue stays just in the tank.

Do this: stay out of the car, even if the pump wants clearing. Get the staff to lend a hand pushing it to a space, hold on to the bottle, then phone us right there. Draining it there at the petrol pump is possible if it cannot be moved, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Albany

Days had passed with the warning light on. Picked up a bottle, tipped it in at home, recycled the empty — and only then checked the cap again, after the fact. Right off Windlass Lane is no less likely from anywhere.

The point: zero driving since leaves this almost equal to finding it at the pump. Diesel and AdBlue stay apart: the AdBlue settles to the floor of the tank and remains put, however long it waits.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so nobody moves your car in the morning. Then ring. Your drive is where it gets drained, be it around Albany or Town Centre. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Albany

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Albany?

A mile or two after topping up, your engine began playing up: rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash. Somewhere along Albany Way or on the road towards Newcastle upon Tyne — under 10 miles away.

Meaning? The pump has sucked the AdBlue up. The high-pressure pump and every injector see it as well on a bigger trip, once your filter and lines have it. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Pull in somewhere safe — that is the first step — then turn everything off. On the A194(M), under a mile from Albany, that means the next junction, not the services further on. It will not have cleared, and so there is no sense starting it again to check. Phone us and say how far you travelled.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

It is a motor you have had for a week. On your own vehicle, AdBlue is missing or somewhere else. On this one, its inlet is just next to your diesel inlet — news to you. Across Tyne and Wear, no one is immune.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. The owner often has to approve the work, under plenty of hire and company contracts.

Next: phone the rental company or your fleet manager first, and then us — sorting it before our arrival is faster. If you're stranded in the car park outside Heworth, or by Marks & Spencer, whilst you wait for an answer, leave your car off.

Albany: unsure whether it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

"I think so" is sometimes the most honest as it gets. What cap was taken off, you cannot recall; but the bottle feels less than it ought to, and ammonia hangs by your filler. Maybe at a friend's drive in Glebe, or rushing by Albany Village Primary School on the school run.

Meaning? Spills around the inlet don't touch the motor at all. AdBlue inside the diesel tank does. Any AdBlue in your tank would be pulled in by starting the vehicle, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

Next: act as though it got in, and keep the engine off. Describe what you noticed on the phone. A clear tank checked counts as a happier result than an already-run one drained.

The common ground in each Albany AdBlue drain

The work begins identically, whichever your situation. Three things come once our engineers reach your car — on a forecourt, a driveway, a road beside Washington F Pit Museum or the car park outside Duke of Albany: the fluid, the amount, and whether it has been started. Answers set the job; the price comes by phone while no one has left yet.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to certain metals in fuel systems, and so it won't rinse out unaided; that's why a full flush, after the drain, matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol. Then is your filter — flushed, or replaced where needed — followed by clean diesel, and a test of the car. Not started? In that case roughly half an hour on site covers most jobs.

Lastly, our engineers fire it up. Our check that it runs smoothly on clean diesel comes before our engineers head off. When it's noticed early, the vehicle very rarely has lasting damage, and the entire job takes place where it is. Payment is on the day, never in advance. For the insurer, there is a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling, and so check yours while the van travels.

AdBlue drains in Albany, and across Tyne and Wear too

Parked heading to Albany Park, or bang in the centre of Albany, the vehicle remains where it is — there is no need to move it anywhere. Our van empties it in place. Phone and check instead of guessing when you are close to The Galleries, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down.
