AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Aldgate? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm starts till the motor pulls it round. Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Aldgate. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Aldgate

Things to do:

  • Remove the keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting PE9 3, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.
  • Even a short way along Aldgate is too far to drive the car.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Aldgate, whether it's the BP or somewhere else. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a separate tank it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the motor emits. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle topped up in Easton on the Hill yesterday and not started stays the simple case, provided nobody turns your key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning in Aldgate leaves things worse. In that tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Aldgate

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through. Whether the car sits in Tinwell or the heart of Aldgate, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Rutland the car is sitting.

Aldgate: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. No one means it. Mostly it is not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. Rushing, outside Ketton Church of England Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills your car. After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near Station Road. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Railway Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Hired cars, brand-new vehicles, company motors, or the second vehicle in a home with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it most. Same slip, same first response — leave it off — anywhere you happen to be around Aldgate or the rest of Rutland.

Aldgate: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from multisports pitch, perhaps, or part way across Aldgate. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than testing it again. Every start pulls more of it through.

Leave the Great North Road, under 15 miles from Aldgate, by the next junction and park safely, not carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why a hop across Aldgate to park beside Methodist Chapel and a drive of under 15 miles towards Peterborough are such different jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop. Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Aldgate?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Aldgate: a side street near St Mary the Virgin, Ketton, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, since those replies determine this work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Finally, your system is bled with fresh diesel. Then our technicians fire it up and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Stamford or a drive in Aldgate. The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Aldgate?

Each job is different, so no single price is honest. Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Ketton Centre.

Which fluid got in, how much, and if the engine ran: each Aldgate call opens by asking exactly that, before any figure, not after. Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
