Allithwaite: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Usually, when the motor hasn't run, it is drained and fully flushed where the vehicle is around Allithwaite. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels on the roads about Allithwaite and Flookburgh carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Allithwaite?

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Quarry Lane before work, or in the car park outside The Pheasant Inn heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. It takes a few seconds, whether out in Kents Bank or right in the centre of Allithwaite.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Allithwaite

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Grange-over-Sands or a forecourt around Allithwaite.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.
  • On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Kents Bank.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever it is around Cumbria — a routine to follow.

  • Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never rushed by High Croft Drive at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • The two under one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.
  • Close the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

Discover during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

Allithwaite: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine. On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the another forecourt nearby or somewhere else. If you are on your own drive in Allithwaite, leave the car where it sits.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. On the M6, under 10 miles from Allithwaite, that means the next exit. Distance matters — a quick hop across Allithwaite is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Lancaster — so say roughly how far it went.

Allithwaite: what happens when our engineers turn up

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it by Allithwaite CofE Primary School, beside Allithwaite Community Centre or at home, our van travels to it. Those answers determine this work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run. No one sets off until you have had our quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of your system. Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it sits. A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
