AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Alverton? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then keep your ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Alverton, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has run. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Alverton: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys away.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting TR18 4, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the moment your ignition goes on, so keep the car off.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Lansdowne Road.
  • By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Rolling your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Alverton forecourt you are on, the Texaco included. Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what the engine emits. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. A motor filled on a drive in Trereife overnight and not started since is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

After it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, waiting overnight in Alverton leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, time does nothing. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Tesco. Harm just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in the tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether your vehicle sits in Heamoor or the centre of Alverton, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Cornwall your car is sitting.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Alverton?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap — may look the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts allow it. Mostly it's never the filling station: someone picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Alverton Primary School the refill is rushed. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway near Lansdowne Place. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Pirate Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet motor, or the other motor of a family with both fuel types — the cars people know the least. Leave it off: that is the first response to the same slip, wherever around Alverton or the remainder of Cornwall you happen to be.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Alverton?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Maybe returning from Millenium Wood, or midway across Alverton, your motor might go rough, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M5, over 50 miles from Alverton, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, so driving for Truro, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Alverton to the car park by Exchange Library. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Alverton

A street beside Newlyn Orion Gallery, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has stopped in Alverton, our engineers come to it. Three answers shape the job, and so first our technicians ask what was put in, about the amount, plus whether the motor has turned over.

Next, draining the tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the street at night.

The final step is to prime your system on fresh diesel. Then we start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay outside Penzance or a drive in Alverton. The test before our engineers go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Alverton

There's no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same. What moves the price is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind St. Peter's Church.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether it ran: each Alverton call begins with exactly those, ahead of a figure, never afterwards. Given them, the range narrows to one firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Check your policy while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
